Food Allergy in Dog

I started another thread about dogs itchy belly and piriton. He's had 3 days of piriton with no effect.
I've just been reading up and it sounds like a food allergy......itchy belly sometimes with red pustules, watery eyes sometimes with 'eye bogies'
I will be taking him to the vet but does anyone have experience of food allergy in dogs?
He's 7 months old and is fed pets at home 'step up to naturals' which is puppy kibble with no wheat.....

My dog was on a very high dose of steroids so hopefully you won't have as many issues but something to be aware of.

I had a staffie who lived till he was 17 completely allergic to meat. He was so bad if any touched his mouth he would blister immediately. He had a totally vegan diet no meat extracts at all. He had kibble made up in London that had no animal extracts in it. He had desensitisation injections because he had to have 4 ounces of chicken or fish a day for his muscles. He hated eating it and I would have to give it to him disguised in a jam sandwich! I now have another staffie that will only eat chicken.

We've had 4 days of antibiotics and steroids and the itching has greatly reduced! Although he's soooo hungryShock He stole a muffin off the worktop this morning! and he's peeing loads, but it's working!

So little update, the antibiotics have finished but we have a few more days of steroids (gone from 2 to 1 a day)
He itches a little bit now hes only on 1 steroid but probably only a couple of times a day. The skin has cleared up beautifully.
I'm concerned that once the steroids stop completely the itching will start again.
We have check up at the vet tomorrow so will see what he suggests.
I assume dogs can't be on long term steroids?

its not great, but they kept our dog on a low dose to help.

And to answer your previous question (sorry not checked into the site fr a while) We ended up getting him allergen tested because it was food related, rather than environmental!

well the vet today (different vet so bit annoying) says the spots still havnt cleared so have given another 2 weeks of antibiotics. (still have one week of steroids left) She says it may be seasonal, may be food but we need to clear the ?infection first

My dog had the same rash. Our vet (who happened to have a special interest in allergies) gave me a few guidelines.

She's now on a raw diet of pork and rice. In one week her itching is a lot better. We also discovered that febreeze made her allergies worse.

We have to keep her in this diet for another 6 weeks and then reintroduce her to some kibble and see how she reacts.

Oh I've never had a pet with allergies. I can imagine that it's also very stressful. I do however have a kid with some crazy allergies. It's super scary sometimes when you see your child turn purple and start gasping for breath. The first time it happened I was so stunned I didn't know what to do. Thankfully a friend of mine who is allergic to nuts carried an epi-pen with him and he figured out that actually was wrong with my daughter. I was so scared. I booked an appointment with a pediatrician the next morning. I had her tested for all potential allergens to be sure ( I used this private lab to make all the tests: www.intolerancelab.co.uk). They got us all the results in the span of 3-4 business days. Turns out my girl is allergic to nuts, shellfish and bees, plus some fabrics. I am glad that I m aware of it since it's scary to see her suffering. If you need it check them out
