Neighbours dog left alone all day

hereforasillygoosetime · 11/08/2019 11:51

Couple purchased puppy approx 6 months ago, both work full time and the dog is non stop distressed barking all day. Couple refuse to employ dog walker/sitter and council have done nothing about many complaints from numerous neighbours.

Any advice? Is there nothing to be done for this poor dog.

Unfortunately the only answer is complain complain complain. Make the council take action. What do the neighbours say? Are they bothered? Do they apologise?

BiteyShark · 11/08/2019 12:30

The only thing you can do is to complain about the noise.

As long as the dog has access to food, water and shelter then they tick all the boxes on their welfare.

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 11/08/2019 15:07

Yup. My next door neighbour does this with their three dogs. I complained about the barking all day. Didn’t make any difference. Why have dogs if ur going to leave them for ten hrs a day

hereforasillygoosetime · 11/08/2019 15:23

They just sort of shrug and say "we work".
Have suggested dog sitters etc and posted leaflets through their door but no dog sitter so far.

Another really odd thing, the woman when she takes the dog out in her car on a weekend puts the dog in her boot with the parcel shelf down.....so the dog is literally closed in. Confused

I wish people had to have licences to own dogs.

One of my neighbours left their dog all alone all day and barked all the time so reported them. They were told to get someone to call round once a day to check on him. It is work telling the RSPCA

Mileysmiley · 11/08/2019 15:29

work worth stupid phone!

OliveToboogie · 11/08/2019 15:51

Totally selfish on your neighbours part. Cruel to their pups and totally anti-social. All you can do is keep records and complain.

fivedogstofeed · 11/08/2019 18:34

I would really struggle to tolerate that and would absolutely steal and rehome the puppy at the earliest opportunity
A note through the door saying their dog is in distress and that you are reporting to dog warden and environmental health? We know the dog warden won't do anything but environmental health may help as it's a noise issue.

squee123 · 11/08/2019 18:38

Dog warden, environmental health and all your local councillors (who can put pressure on the first two). If all else fails you can take the neighbour to court yourself for the noise nuisance. A hassle but may be worth it to get a better outcone for the poor dog.

adaline · 11/08/2019 20:05

RSPCA won't do anything so long as the dog has food, water and shelter. The bar for neglect is incredibly low.

But it's worth keeping a diary of the noise (and recording it if possible) and reporting the situation to Environmental Health. I have a dog who would bark non-stop if we left him so...we don't leave him. While we work he spends the day with my in-laws and we have previously forked out for doggy daycare - it's what you do when you have a dog and a full-time job!

hereforasillygoosetime · 11/08/2019 20:50

Thanks for all your advice, I will keep on with the complaints!!

How are you with dogs? Would it be worth offering to pop round each day and reassure the dog each day? We've done this with neighbours before. I know you shouldn't have to, but for us it was better than the barking. Dog walkers are expensive and lots of owners don't factor that in.

hereforasillygoosetime · 12/08/2019 03:53

I love dogs but I'm heavily pregnant and not very well so it's not something I can commit to at the moment :(

Make a recording of the dog to send to the Council

CostaOrProseccoPlease · 12/08/2019 13:54

Just a thought, could you offer to pop in when you can to let it out to the garden and give it some attention? Of course it's not your responsibility but for peace of mind?
