Do I need a harness AND a collar?

Hi. My puppy is still too young to go out for walks but she potters round the garden in her Ezydog harness and is fine with the lead.
Before I got her I bought a Truelove harness which is still a little big around her neck but has a ring on the back and on the chest. Do I put her tag on the chest one and not bother with a collar or does she need a collar as well?
Does anyone else have the Truelove harness? How much room should there be round her neck? It fits round her body beautifully.
TIA

I also think its far easier to catch hold of a dog in a harness than one in a collar.

Have a tag on a collar, if she escaped not everyone has a scanner to hand but can read a tag and give you a call, do not put her name on the tag, just address and phone number. Please can people remove collars when dogs are indoors, there’s been several occasions of dogs being choked when their collars get caught on handles etc. Mine only get collars/harness to go out.

The fact is if anybody grabbed my dog by his neck or by a collar they’d likely have a dog that needed resuscitating .

Microchips can fail, and frequently do, definitely have a tag with your info as well.

With regards to the original question, our dog wears a collar with a tag all the time and a harness when out for walks. You don't need a tag on when in the house but I would put one on if there is any chance of it getting out. I don't see that there would be any problem with putting the tag on the harness when out and about if you really don't want a collar.

Flora I doubt it does matter is on a harness or collar (especially with health issues) I expect when the law was drawn up most dogs were on collars. Also collars tend to be on 24/7 whereas harnesses are removed.

I have working sheep dog and working scent dogs so often remove collars for working but put them back on for "normal dog" activities. Most of the old dog collars are the breakaway ones though.

I would always have a collar with a tag. I say this because I once found a stray dog in the park when walking my dog and the stray had no ID on them. I spent half an hour (Sunday afternoon) calling the council, trying to find a dog warden or similar to come collect and scan the microchip. Nobody would come out.

If the dog had a simple ID tag I would have been able to just call the owner. So yes, always have a collar.

Speaking of tags, slide tags are much less likely to get lost than normal tags. We've got through a lot of tags over the years, but never lost a slide one.

You can get embroidered collars which my dog always wore. My phone number and 'I am chipped' was embroidered round the collar and our surname and address was laser etched on the clasp. She was always losing tags so this was an excellent solution and the collar was made of bamboo so comfy for her.

New puppy will get one too when she's fully grown.

It's illegal not to have a collar on your dog.

Ours wears a collar all the time (unless he's having a bath) which has his ID tag on it. He has a harness but only wears it in the car. Otherwise he's walked on his collar.

Tensixtysix · 08/08/2019 16:30

I walk dogs for a local kennels and we use a harness and all the dogs have collars. One lead goes on the harness and then we have a small 'link' that attaches to the collar.
Otherwise, it's a second lead on the collar.
Can't trust harnesses.

Putanotherwashon · 08/08/2019 19:17

@Tensixtysix why can’t we trust harnesses?

Can trust my harness , he has an Indi dog Houdini and the only way it would fail is if the stitching actually came apart , which is unlikely as I check it regularly .

cheeseislife8 · 08/08/2019 19:42

Ours wears her tag on her harness and is naked in the house

My dog has only ever been walked on a harness. She's a small dog and I use a harness in preference to a collar as I don't want to cause damage to her trachea.

In the 8 years of her life she has never escaped or got free from the harness in any way so I'm at a lost to know why you can't trust harnesses.

She also has a collar and she has a tag on both her collar and harness.
