Does a raw diet result in smaller poos?

I’ve seen in various threads that it does.

I’m open minded, is this correct and if so do we have photographic evidence of the claim?

Thanks.

I have no photographic evidence but I do have a grizzly fact for you.

If you leave a raw fed dog poo it turns white within a day due to the bone content then instead of picking it up you can actually stomp on it with your shoe and it turns into fine white odour free dust

Winenotttea · 02/07/2019 23:01

I’d like to see a time stamped evidence of that. I’m not being snarky but if it’s that amazing then I’ll give it a go. Without evidence I won’t.

I’m not taking and posting poo pics but I can confirm the smaller, harder and white poo thing too. My dog is thriving on raw. Hated kibble.
Feed what you think suits you and your dog best.

Fucksandflowers · 02/07/2019 23:04

Sadly as my dog isn't raw fed anymore I can't do that, but hopefully some other mumsnetter will photograph some raw poo (and leave some and stomp it to prove it goes to dust!) for you.

It's an excellent diet but can be expensive depending on where you live/where you can source meat and problematic to store hence me not following it anymore

Winenotttea · 02/07/2019 23:06

I’m really interested in this, if it’s for real it means that I don’t have to poo pick my garden every day, just mow once per week and all of the poo will just waft into the garden as fertiliser.

Why have we not been told about this before?

Raw poos are so much more bearable than non-raw. The non-raw ones I’m practically vomiting trying to scoop them up 🤮 the raw ones are like playdoh. The dog doesn’t smell either when it’s on a raw diet.

Winenotttea · 02/07/2019 23:09

My dog doesn’t smell?

I spray my dogs every day with a dog friendly fragrance 😂

Clearly that’s an untruth!

Everyone told me that due to the fact there was hardly any waste product from raw feeding that they practically pooped out little pellet poos when raw fed! I do think my dog has pooped less often per day than when she was fed on wet food and kibble and it’s probably marginally smaller but not how it was made out. Also, I’ve left her poop on the garden for over 24 hours when being lazy and it’s never turned white so that one has intrigued me lol

Fucksandflowers · 02/07/2019 23:24

My collie's poos were minuscule! And they definitely went white.

How much bone do you feed?
If it's not turning white and dusty that suggests a very low amount of bone.

OrchidInTheSun · 02/07/2019 23:27

My dogs turn white. But I pick them up because I don't like a garden full of shit. Also, they won't go white in long grass because there's too much moisture.

They're loads firmer too. Very few wet poos

8feet12paws2fins · 03/07/2019 07:21

I don’t make up my own, i just feed a complete from nutriment. She has only gone on to it recently and so i just went for something the raw feeding person at the shop advised and that was simple for a beginner. I always pick poo up too, especially with having DC but being totally honest there has been occasions where I’ve left it until the next day if I’m being lazy and I know the kids aren’t going out there. Don’t think I would do the dust thing and leave it though.

BarkandCheese · 03/07/2019 07:33

The difference in my dog’s poos now she’s on a raw diet compared to when she ate kibble is amazing. They’re much smaller, don’t have a strong smell and I can confirm that if left out in the garden for a couple of days they do indeed turn white and crumbly. My dog doesn’t smell either, but she’s not a smelly breed.

BassAce · 03/07/2019 07:34

Yep, my two are raw fed - and have raw bones that they eat as snacks - and their poos come out hard and (almost unbelievably) odour free. And as others have said, within a day or two they have turned white and gone crumbly, although I personally don't tend to leave them that long in the garden.

The only downside to it was toilet training when they were puppies was harder, cos if they snuck off to poo somewhere behind a sofa or something, there is no "smell" to alert you to what they have done!! (and I admit, I'm occasionally guilty of picking up poo on a walk, sticking the bag in a coat pocket and then forgetting about it till I put the coat back on a week later...) But for me, its just perfect. I just wish my neighbour and her dog shit filled back garden would raw feed too... GrinGrin

Cloudtree · 03/07/2019 08:17

Is the raw food much more expensive?

Fucksandflowers · 03/07/2019 08:35

If you have access to a good butcher and have the ability to store in bulk then I think it's probably not that expensive.

But for me, no car, no local friendly butchers and a tiny freezer it was pretty expensive for me and when circumstances meant we had to cut back that was the one of the things sacrificed.

She is perfectly happy and healthy on her (grain free) conventional diet but there is no doubt as far as I am concerned that raw is the superior diet

missbattenburg · 03/07/2019 09:01

Raw poos much more acceptable than cooked.

Smaller, harder (like little marbles) and with very little odour. Never left them long anough to go white but remeber whie dog poo in the street from my childhood Grin

Battendog is no longer fed raw - which suits him/me - but I miss the poos...

BassAce · 03/07/2019 09:26

I find raw feeding a much cheaper way to feed our two dogs. Admittedly, they are dachshunds so not a big breed with a large appetite - but with all the bones and treats included I get a monthly delivery that costs me £34 (which includes poo bags and delivery charge) , so it works out approximately 50p per dog per day for food. I would definitely struggle to find tinned dog food and kibble that was anywhere close to being that price, and if I did it would be lacking in nutritional value, so for me it's a great option.

I do have a second freezer specifically to store dog food in, which is why I can get away with buying a months worth at a time, and without this it would be trickier to do. And to start with I used to keep forgetting to get the next batch of food out to defrost in time, but you get into the habit pretty quick. And in the summer our dogs quite like to eat it semi frozen anyway!

NellieEllie · 03/07/2019 09:53

Oh yes! MUCH smaller. It does depend what sort of raw you do. The higher the veg content, the bigger the poo. Some rubbish stuff also has rice in it. I buy from a raw supplier online and do mainly prey model (80% meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, 5% other offal). Poo is small, firm and not much smell. I have a 40kg dog and 20kg dog. Whenever I see the size of other dogs poops it’s always a shock. If I walk someone else’s kibble fed dog, the soft, squidgy texture, size and smell turns my stomach! I can easily pick up even my large dog poops in one hand, one grab.
Yes it does go white after a day or so and crumbles, but I still pick it up, still bacteria in there.

NellieEllie · 03/07/2019 10:00

As for expense, you can get very cheap suppliers online. You need a separate freezer really. Many butchers give you cheap stuff - lungs, hearts, bones. BUT personally I think you get what you pay for. Ethically raised, grass fed British meat is what I look out for - venison, pheasant preferable for me to farmed, but grass fed beef, lamb is OK. I avoid pork (pig welfare is appalling in the UK and EU), don’t use a lot of chicken or turkey, but some. Tripe used to bring down price a bit, as generally a waste product. Now they’ve sussed that raw feeders love it so prices have shot up.
There’s good FB pages with lists of suppliers and advice - Raw Feeding Advice and Support or BARF UK.

Cloudtree · 03/07/2019 11:20

Can anyone recommend online suppliers? We are picking up our puppy next week. We'll keep him on whatever he is currently eating until he settles but will then look at raw

Wolfiefan · 03/07/2019 13:01

Depends very much on where you are in the country and budget too. Many places will deliver.

Pringle89 · 03/07/2019 15:44

So I was just moving the paddling pool which has been up for a week and found a little white poo which must have been hiding! I thought I Would take a photo for you 😂 💩
