I’d been looking for one of these but the only puppy support thread currently running is for older puppies. I’ve seen a few threads recently from posters who have new puppies like me, and thought I’d start our own group as I’d love to compare notes. But all welcome!

To kick off -

My pup, DartyPup, is a female poodle cross who is nearly 11 weeks old. Very sweet, friendly, fairly calm, sleeps a good stretch at night in her crate no problem and is happy to play in the garden by herself if I’m in the kitchen/conservatory and we easily have eyes on each other. She has a lot of naps and is doing well with house training.

But- she has the usual puppy traits of being needy and nippy. She loves biting bare toes and has a witching hour in the evening (as another poster aptly describes it!).

I adore the bond we seem to have bit am finding it draining. My children are old enough to be hands on and are keen to be, but their periods of peak energy don’t always correspond with the Pup’s. And when it comes down to it, she often wants me and so will whine if left with them downstairs while I escape for a rest. If they mistakenly leave a door open giving her access to the stairs, she’ll leg it up to find me. A stair gate isn’t an option unfortunately due to the design of our stairs.

Both my kids have never been particularly early risers and I’ve always been secretly pleased about dodging 6am wake up calls ... until DartyPup.

@3teens2cats the parenting parallels are crazy.

In puppy personal development I tried the putting him in his crate to settle during mad hour last night. Worked wonders. He had a snooze then curled up nicely with me on the sofa for the last 45 mins before bedtime. Winning!

Mouldiwarp1 · 20/07/2019 10:25

Mouldipup’s biting was getting better, but seems to be deteriorating again. He stops when I tell him to .... and then reattaches when I take another step - numpty! We went to puppy group yesterday and he spent most of the time humping a little bitch (who is going to be 4 times his size in a few weeks). I think he’s in love. We had a lot of rain on Thursday and he was NOT keen on going out for poo/pee. Cue several accidents in the house. He’s 14 weeks today and we love him. 😁

Mouldiwarp1 · 20/07/2019 10:29

I’ve been up for hours - puppy. Not moving much though and still not dressed! 😁

Oops didn’t mean to put that here - puppy brain! Grin

Hi all, so after it got better it’s gotten worse. DartyPup is 18 weeks on Monday.

Soooooo barky. Effing hell, she’d be happy staying in the garden barking all night - at the smell/sound of foxes in the park behind our house, at the birds in the trees, at the neighbours’ upstairs bedroom when they have the light on, at the wind in the trees, at any passing plane of which there are many (cheers Heathrow flight path), at the leaves in the trees .... Her favourite spot is to sit on one of our sunloungers and bark.

When inside, she likes to bark the second she hears another dog or a person passing in the street outside. Or at us for our dinner.

We went to have a look at our puppy today, he is seriously cute! Now 6 weeks old so all being well we will get him after his 8 week jabs.

Do they just have 8 and 10 week jabs? And the owner said she thinks after the 10 week jabs they still can't go out on walks for another 2 weeks?

Also any puppy food and dog insurance recommendations? He is a terrier mix.

Any name suggestions?

@girliefriends the vaccines schedule will depend on the product they use. Also worth considering that not all vets use the same brand of vaccines and they are not normally compatible with each other. So if your pup has one jab with the breeder you will need to find a vet who can carry on with the same brand for the next lot or you risk having to start again. This happened to us and really delayed him being able to get out and about properly. So he had first jab with breeder just before we collected him but then couldn't find any local vets who used that brand so had to wait 2 weeks and then start again. Then we had 4 weeks between jabs and then had to wait a week before he was fully protected. We had to be really creative with socialisation!

Girliefriendlikescake · 20/07/2019 17:17

3teens the puppy is quite local to us so we will go to his vets for the 2nd set. Then will register him at our vets afterwards.

First professional (mini) groom today.

Puppy now looks like my mother. Quite disconcerting.

Duchess what I did for barking with my older dogs was teach talk as a comand, so they bark when you say, it seemed to make it easier to teach quiet if that makes sense.

We have been at a local festival this weekend and popped back to spend an hour with her and the. Left again and she has been settled in the crate while we were gone.

Started clicker training yesterday. Still really struggling with the chewing, we also put her int he crate if she gets too giddy and it seems to mean she is over tried.

Hi all, think this thread will be essential for me. We are collecting our puppy at 8 weeks in 10 days time. If they have their seconds jabs at 10 weeks when are they allowed to go out, socialise with other vaccinated dogs?
Also, can I take the puppy to a family member’s house who does not have a dog? So MMA’s questions

Whywhywhy1 · 21/07/2019 15:21

Many that should say

Girliefriendlikescake · 21/07/2019 18:06

Why we're getting our puppy at the same time as you!

Whywhywhy1 · 21/07/2019 19:26

Girlie, really? How old will your be?

3teens2cats · 21/07/2019 19:32

The advice I followed was that you can and should take puppy out straight away but they must not go down on the floor in any place that unvaccinated dogs might have been. So your garden and friends/family gardens are fine (as long as their dogs are vaccinated). You can invite vaccinated dogs to visit your home too. Parks, footpaths, general public streets etc would be unacceptable as you have no idea who has been there. I took pup out and about as much as I could but carried him, you can even buy puppy slings! We would sit on a bench and watch the world go by and of course people will come and say hello. That way he got to see and experience lots of people and places during the crucial socialisation period. Best to check with your own vet regarding how soon after the final jab they can go out properly as it does seem to vary depending on which ones they use.

Whywhywhy1 · 21/07/2019 19:40

Thanks 3teens. I’ve read a few confiding things about taking a dog out. I know not to put the puppy down until after they are completely covered by their second vaccinations but was hoping I could take the puppy to my mum’s (no dogs there) and my sister’s (1 vaccinated puppy). I’m just trying to establish if this is ok.

Girliefriendlikescake · 21/07/2019 22:34

Why yes that's fine, it's more public spaces where unvaccinated dogs could have been that is the issue afaik.

We're getting our puppy on the 5th of August and he'll be 8 weeks then.

Just started reading easy peasy puppy squeazy! Am liking it so far, lots of useful advice.

Whywhywhy1 · 21/07/2019 23:29

Thanks Girlie, so exciting isn’t it? Do you have dc? Mine are 6 and 8 and cannot wait!!
Glad that I will be able to go to my mum and sister’s with the puppy although want to spent the first little while just letting him settle and acclimatise to his new home.

Whywhywhy1 · 21/07/2019 23:30

Also I will look for that book if you say it’s helpful. Any help or advise will be gratefully received. Just want to do a good job caring for him.

MsMarvellous · 22/07/2019 06:59

Morning @Girliefriendlikescake and @Whywhywhy1 Welcome to the puppy thread.

MarvelPup is just over 13 weeks now. Our vaccinations are split into 3 and He has his final
Ones on Thursday this week and we'll no longer be tied to pavement only walks.

His crazy hour in the evening is still off the scale but as he's happy in his crate these days if it gets unmanageable he has downtime in there.

I'm impressed this morning. He woke me at 5:15 for a wee but has settled back down in his crate with no fuss and I'm in bed waiting for the kids to wake up. Huge improvement!

I'm ready for training classes to start next weekend. Pro tips will definitely help now he's getting so big and strong. I need to work hard on recall and walking nicely.

Whywhywhy1 · 22/07/2019 08:49

Msmarvellous sounds like everything is going really well. How old was Pup when you got him?

MsMarvellous · 22/07/2019 10:41

He was 9 weeks when we got him and because it was summer he was mostly toilet trained when we got him. He's a Dalmatian, a larger breed, so I think it helps him get through the night as his bladder is bigger. Or I'm just lucky. He's a monster chewer and wrecker of things 😂

Girliefriendlikescake · 22/07/2019 11:53

Why what breed of dog are you getting? We're getting a terrier mix (yorkie/ jrt)
