Puppy diarrhea

My 11w old pup has had diarrhea (as in pretty liquid and frequent - probably poos 7/8 ish times in 24 hours) the whole 2 weeks we have had him. What is normal, and how do I work out whether it is his food causing it? He’s on dry puppy food, had to change him from the breeder’s because we couldn’t buy it locally - his stools were firmer when he first came home, so maybe I should order it online if possible. He eats loads of crap (bird poo, unidentifiable objects etc) from the garden too, so perhaps that is the problem too. It’s pretty gross!

The ideal poo for a dog is solid enough that it holds its shape when you pick it up. Of course there are variations depending on diet and stress and similar but poo shouldn't be consistently runny for long periods of time, no.

My dog only ever gets runny poo if he's eaten too much (starts off solid and goes runny towards the end) or has eaten something he shouldn't do! I would be really concerned about runny poo lasting long in a puppy, especially a young one.

Thanks adaline, that’s helpful.

I think the side effects comment from the vet yesterday was about giardia treatment.

Thinking back, his first poo on the carpet was solid enough to pick up without leaving a trace, so it has changed a lot since he’s been here. I’m whatsapping my vet friend with some pictures!

He can treat with probiotics though and check stool sample for infection. Though that costs.

The first treatment for giardia is panacur as pps have said. If it needs antibiotics as well then the specific one for this is quite serious and can have side effects. As I understand most vets would not use this unless completely sure it was giardia.

Probiotics and panacur would be harmless, and may well solve the problem.

You can get Panacur online as well, you don't need a vets prescription.

What food have you changed to?
And however good the food is sometimes it doesn't agree with them.

Yep, not all dogs can cope with the high protein foods that score "well" on websites. Chappie is a good food for dogs with sensitive stomachs, and cheap too!
