Very excited - adopting a dog

He's not home with us yet but I just want to yell it from the rooftops. We've been looking for a dog for ages but were always turned down because of DC's ages. So today we met Dexter, a very smiley and waggy tailed Heinz 57 type. He's a bit smaller than a cocker. Our first family dog and we're all very excited. I forgot to take pics as we were too busy playing. We've bought Pets at Home today. Grin

Love this thread! We’re hoping to get a rescue dog at the end of the summer, I have wanted a dog for YEARS.

@Elderflower14 are you L and is that W? Your dog is utterly luscious.

I had to wait 70 years before I could get a dog. She is the best thing in my life and has changed it so much. Currently she is laying on my feet while I MN

Yes we are L & W... 💙

Ahhhh! @Elderflower14 how lovely to see a photo of your dog and of W. What a gorgeous pair they make. You must be so proud Smile

Yay, hoped it was you!

Dogs are the best, especially rescue dogs.

It's so lovely reading about our lovely rescues. My DH has turned into an utter marshmallow. It's his first dog Smile. Actually he is an utter delight and so far I've only lost a ball of wool and an oven glove to chewing.

How long does it take for their paws to harden up for walking on pavements? We've loads of fields around but have pavements to get to them and I get the feeling his paws are tender. Also, what do you do to keep them occupied and engaged on horrible rainy days when they don't want to go outside? It seems he's a fair weather dog Grin

We have lots of puzzle toys - kongs, a Kong Wobbler (like a big weeble that they have to knock over to get a treat out, a Molecuball (the best thing I have ever bought, 16 years old, on its third dog, everybody's favourite and not a mark on it), a snake thing that we got from B&M, a lickimat, a snuffle mat - and we just dole out part of his daily food through various combinations of these. He's currently trying to get a baby carrot out of the snake.

Occupying her by throwing a ball up stairs so that she chases it, good cardio vascular workout. We have lots of balls all round, ready to throw up or down stairs.

A small water bottle with 5 bits of kibble, thread the top through with string and tie it between two chair backs. She knocks it around and spins it till the kibble falls out.

A cardboard box with brown paper parcels. One piece of kibble, cheese or sausage in each parcel. We fold the box over so that she really has to work at getting it.

On really wet days, we giver her her food in a Kong or other type of feeder, rather than in a bowl.
