What's your dog's daily routine?

Hi,

I feel like I am posting lots of questions at the moment but I am trying to get a good idea of what owning a dog is like before we make the decision to get one.

So what is your daily routine with your dog? How much time do you spend walking them, playing with them, how much do they sleep, are left alone etc? What does a typical day look like? (e.g get up at 7am, play for 15 mins then breakfast etc)

I realise it may vary depending on the breed so would be really helpful if you could say what breed your dog is too.

Thank you!

With pup on a working/school day it’s currently -

Up at 6.30 and out for toilet break and then breakfast. Run manically around house playing with children as they get ready for school and I get ready for work.

I go to work, teen gets bombarded instead until she goes to work at 10.30.

Home alone sleeping/ chewing etc until I get home for lunch between 12/1 for half hour. Play a few ball games/cuddles.

Teen home at 3.30. I’m home between 4-6 when he gets a walk from one of us. Lots of chasing and playing with children. Dinner at 6pm.

Bed around 10/11pm (takes himself if I’m still up at that time).

At weekends, my day off, school holidays etc the only routine is keeping meal times the same. We go out Randomly for walks etc and he comes with us when we go anywhere.

My boy is 9 and pretty low energy. He loves his walks but only short ones so we do 2/3 a day.

7ish: he does the clicky clacky (with his nails) wake up dance on the hall floor.

7:01ish I open the back door to let him in the garden for a wee. He looks at the outside, sniffs the air and turns back into the house. Wake up dance declared false alarm

7:02ish I get his breakfast. He ignores it and comes to watch me eat mine.

7:05ish he gives me the “I think I really need out now” eyes. I bring him out. He snuffles the grass to check who has been in his garden overnight. Checks behind the bushes for any nocturnal stragglers. Declares it safe to pee. Pees. Does the legs in the air wiggle. Skips back to the house for breakfast.

8:10 we go on the school walk and then a bit of a loop afterwards just me and him. He poops. Walk Takes about 30 minutes. Then I bring him and his poop home and head to work.

12:30 I come home for lunch and he goes out for more garden reconnaissance. Also a pee.

1:15 I go to work

3:20 back from work and school run and we go to a park about 5 minutes away. Spend about 30 minutes there off lead. Chasing a ball, legs in air wiggling, sniffing air and grass. Ignoring dog friends who come to say hello (he’s very rude)

Home around 4: he spends evening going in and out to the garden with me and DC. DC will usually take him for a 10 minute walk around the block around dinner time. On evenings when DC have clubs on I take him out for about an hour.

Weekends we go to National trust type places/beach/coastal walks.

It very much depends on the dog and what works for them. I take my very lazy (Spanish rescue) Podenco out first thing for a pee and a run about then he will typically snooze the morning away - whether I am working from home or going to the office. Walk about lunchtime either with me or Doggie Day Care. Walk with me later in the day, then a pee and run about the garden before bed. Snooze on bed with me all night. Rinse and repeat

My 11 month old golden retriever currently is a bit like this.

7am - Up and off with DP for a walk of 40 minutes or so (and a big poo) usually with his best friend (neighbour's dog) so they prat around fairly relentlessly and he comes back knackered. Yay.
8am-noon - after breakfast, usually snoozing or mooching around back garden. DP and I both work from home, he only gets left alone occasionally.
Noon - outside in back garden for a play and a run around if he feels like it, sometimes he’s still a bit flaked out so he sleeps right through till 1.30 ish.
Between 2-3 - I usually take him for another walk before school runs etc, however we’re finding he’s sometimes happier being left to chill out and will go out in the evening instead (this will be our first summer with him, so we’re still learning what works).
3-5 - chilling and running around in the garden with the kids.
5-7pm - he has his tea and sits around looking hopefully at us as we eat dinner.
7-10pm - sprawling around generally getting in the way, following DP around or watching telly.
10pm - last wee and bed.
