Lurcher- Just the way they are?

We are fostering a whippet x at the moment with a view to adopting him. He is really lovely and the reason we looked into a whippet/ greyhound type dog is that we knew they didn't need tons of exercise and they could be left as we both work. He's not usually left for more than 3 hours without a dog walker and he seems fine. I'm working from home today and was interested in what he did all day. He has literally laid on the sofa! I gave him his Kong which he played with for a bit until it got too difficult to get the bits at the end, he ran around the garden for about 5 seconds then had a lie down, I threw him a frizbee and a ball but he just looked at me! Should I do something else? I got him a big bone from the butcher, a string of sausages to chew, a soft scrunchy toy to squeak, none of which he bothers with! He has a long morning and afternoon walk and is forced out for a quick loo walk in the evening.

Lovely lurchers!

Get him to a secure field and get him running OP, it's such a beautiful sight.

Mine loves a nap but is also incredibly nosey and wants to know is what we're doing all the time. He loves destroying toys especially anything that squeaks and obsessed with playing fetch which isn't normal I think?

In a world of cockerpoos he stands right out, I love my skinny long nosed boy Grin

averythinline · 02/05/2019 21:13

they look and sound amazing but DS really really wants a dog to play fetch with...so will maybe look at more of a mix ....why are so many lurchers in rescues..???...I love that wiry sort of coat...

Tatiebee · 02/05/2019 21:19

I have two retired greyhounds who are the laziest creatures I e ever come across. They have their me ments of wanting to play and they love a walk but apart from that they just love to be snuggled and loved. Our female is much more "pushy" with her affection, meaning she will approach us and jump on the sofa wanting a cuddle whereas my boy won't get on the sofa but loves me to get down on the floor and cuddle him. He's so steady and gentle, a perfect (lazy) gentleman.

AnnaMagnani · 02/05/2019 21:20

With lurchers depends what your non-greyhound bit is.

I told my parents to get a greyhound due to the inherent laziness. They went with a lurcher as they felt a greyhound was too big.

They got a grey x Saluki who wanted to run across the desert for a couple of hours every day Shock

Years ago one of my flatmates wanted a dog. She chose the most enormously tall lurcher from the local cat and dog home. He was amazing. He would wander around the flat trying to find a bed to sleep in or looking for someone to fart at. He was so lazy, the number of times I'd take him for a nice walk to the park and then have to carry him up the stairs afterwards. And I will never forget one walk on the beach - he he looked across the wet sand with grace and beauty and then leapt into some shallow water, only it wasn't shallow and he disappeared up to his ears. So graceful Grin

I loved that lazy dog.

noodlenosefraggle · 02/05/2019 22:47

averythinline it's because they are bred for racing or coursing. So if they are injured, cant race or they arent fast enough they are rejected.
whackaguacamole there is a field that we can hire near us that we were thinking about taking him to.

Mine is obsessed with labs in the park! He just runs to be near them and just stands there while they bound around runnning after the ball, but if you throw him a ball, hes not interested in the slightest! He also likes to sniff little dogs bums, but hates it if they return the favour!

My lurcher loves labs too, and retrievers, she loves playing "it" with them and literally runs circles around them, grinning her face off

She refuses to run with other pointy hounds though, as they might be faster. She only picks slower dogs to run against Grin

Letsnotargue · 03/05/2019 08:08

This has just reminded me. Our whippet would play fetch for a bit, but he was an ex-working dog so was used to bringing stuff back to his old owner (squirrels, rabbits etc after he’d dispatched them).

The greyhound couldn’t care less about fetch but loved to run with other dogs. So when they played fetch in the park he would run with them, but be completely disinterested in the ball when he got there.

Their style of playing was different to other dogs - they would do the whole playbow to get the dogs interested and then run to the other side of the field as that’s what they loved doing. The other dogs would stand there confused as to why they’d instigated play and then run off. Mine were confused nobody had followed them.

This will depend on what the non-whippet bit is, and how strong it is. It’ll be lovely to see them coming out of their shell Smile

Ahhh this thread has me sold. I desperately want a dog as I grew up with collies, Vizla’s and GSDs but have been putting it off while I was working and none of those breeds would be suited to my inner city terrace, tiny garden. I’m now sadly unable to work, so perhaps the time is right after all. However I have a 2 year old (very sensitive to animals, I’ve approached friendly dog owners and asked permission to teach her how to stroke them since she was a baby) and most rescue centres won’t rehome to children under 8. I was interested to see Beachbodynowayready with her beautiful toddler and dogs. Any advice appreciated.

Sexnotgender · 03/05/2019 08:25

Their style of playing was different to other dogs

Totally agree. My boy is finally beginning to play with toys. He loves chasing a ball but isn’t good at the whole bringing it back thing!

GetOffTheRoof · 03/05/2019 08:41

This is my greyhound / border collie / husky / malamute cross. She loves to sprint then sleep in weird positions on the sofa. She is known as Sofa Dog to must people. We can take her for long hikes, then she will sleep for 10 hrs. It's great.

asmuchuse the retired greyhound trust will rehome with children as will a lot of greyhound/lurcher/whippet charities.

We have a large male greyhound in s small flat. Have to go and find him half the time. He's grown up with my DS from a baby.

Greyhound22 thank you, that’s good to hear. Both your boys are beautiful!

ExCwmbranDweller · 03/05/2019 13:30

Just sat down for a second and within and instant my best friend was as close to me as he can physically get. His nose is VERY cold on my toes!

ExCwmbranDweller · 03/05/2019 13:31

His sister would like me to know that she also likes cheese sandwiches.

Sexnotgender · 03/05/2019 13:33

Aww they’re great photos! Yes a cold nose is no fun.

Sam usually sticks his cold nose on the small of my back when I’m sorting the baby or doing laundry Hmm

ExCwmbranDweller · 03/05/2019 13:39

Middle of your back, oof that's got to be a fun surprise!

I love that I am usually ridiculous about not giving away clues about my RL identity on here but when it comes to my dogs I want the world to see how pretty they are! Name change coming up.

POFuserred · 03/05/2019 13:58

Here's mine snuggled up next to me. She's collie/whippetty with perhaps bit of staffy thrown in, now 12 years old, still has the occasional zoom and has the most amazing sense of humour! Gorgeous gentle natured dogs.

ExCwmbranDweller · 03/05/2019 14:03

They just love to be next to their human don't they?

BiscuitDrama · 03/05/2019 14:07

Our greyhound isn’t interested in chew toys either. She loves a dried cow tail/pigs ear/chicken foot though.

SingingSands · 03/05/2019 15:03

This a lovely thread!

Does anyone here also have a cat, or is that a complete no-no (thinking of prey instincts)?

I've been wavering for so long about getting a whippet/greyhound but DHs excuse is the cat (she likes him much more than she does me).

Beachbodynowayready · 03/05/2019 15:06

We have 2 dcats!! One of our Lurchers knew them from tiny puppy stage. Older one- who was a poacher's ddog - actually likes being with them with absolutely no desire to eat them!!
