Border Terrier training book

Hi, can anyone recommend a good book for training a Border from puppy age. We’ve got our pup booked in for classes but as we don’t pick him up for another 4 weeks I’d like to do some reading up on training for the specific breed. Thanks very much!

There's really nothing different about training a border terrier puppy than there is any other breed, particularly not at this stage of life.

A bit later on Total Recall by Pippa Mattinson would be worth a read.

Which puppy classes have you got your dog booked into? They do vary enormously in quality as literally any idiot can call themselves a dog trainer. Ideally, go for someone APDT qualified, or if not IMDT qualified. Avoid anyone who advocates pack leadership / alpha dog / dominance theories like the plague as they've been scientifically thoroughly disproven and it's a sign of someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Avoid anyone who refers to themselves as a "balanced" trainer as they'll use a mix of rewards and punishment. You want someone who teaches only positive reinforcement methods.

I made the mistake of going to crap classes first time round - she told us to be pack leaders, couldn't teach my dog how to do a down as he has little legs (I ended up working it out from YouTube) and later updated her website to say that her classes were suitable for anything from puppies to reactive dogs - at the same time!! I knew they weren't the best but realised just how crap they were when I went to some better ones with an APDT trainer.

A new book out the best puppy book I have seen it is fab easy to read and excellent advice - I can't recommend it enough written by the fantastic Steve Mann.

Thanks for the info! avocados the classes are run by an APDT trainer. I looked around a lot and am prepared to travel a little bit further for good classes as we had crap classes with our late cocker boy and don’t want to make that mistake again. Battendog does mind. He is now rather worried he might be replaced by a new little border terrier.

For his sake please do not post any more super adorable pictures of your new puppy. Especially not if he does anything cute or funny.

Well you have made an excellent choice in puppy! They make fabulous family dogs, my advice is to keep puppy well socialised, borders can be a bit narky, ours isn’t but has always had lots of doggie friends! Also I use a whistle and have done since she was a pup, I would whistle her in from the garden, they are born hunters and will disappear but she has always come back with the whistle.

Thanks bonkers, we’ve only ever been used to spaniel madness so a terrier is all very new. We’re determined to make better choices with training and behaviour with our new lad. Don’t get me wrong Sam, our wonderful cocker, was a joy but we were lazy with his training and consequently he was not the best behaved dog as you can imagine!

HI....your post came up when I was looking for help....2nd border terrier on way end of Oct....had the most beautiful natured boy for 15 years but he sadly passed April 22.....although 2 grand children were about he was older when they were born and we now have 4 ..youngest being 1y.....can I ask which book you ended up getting and was it good....have no idea why I'm over thinking this...I now only work 2 days a week so will be at home with our new wee man more!
