Flea treatment causing bad smell on dig

I’ve been using advantage spot on flea prevention for a few months and have noticed a pattern of a horrible smell appearing on him on the days after application and lasting up to two weeks.

Has anyone else had this and can anyone recommend a good flea prevention that won’t cause this smell?

I use frontline which I buy at the vets

I Used to use frontline but I’ve heard that it has stopped working?

Advantage caused exactly the same bad smell on our beagle mix. I don’t know if it’s because beagles apparently carry a particular bacteria on their skin which might interact. I gave up using it.

My boy is a golden retriever so maybe has the same bacteria in his skin?

I’m definitely going to need something else, the smell is horrible. What did you change to local?

This sounds terrible but I don’t use any flea treatment! But he has been an only dog and not mixed lots as he’s quite old and can’t be bothered with other dogs in the park or woods. Having said that we have just got a second rescue dog so I do need to consider what to use for them both again......

I really need to use something DDog has never had fleas but one of my cats is incredibly susceptible to them and has flea allergy dermatitis which makes his skin so sore so I just always keep all the pets up to date with prevention. The cats get advantage too but it doesn’t seem to create any smell on them.

Get the tablet one from the vets I can't think of the name but much easier and they taste like a treat too.

Bob is it nexgard? That’s what we use.

I use bravecto which was recommended by a specialist dermatology vet. Does fleas and ticks for 3 months.

I use Nexgard spectra is a monthly pill which covers most worms including lung worm, fleas and ticks. My dog hated advocate because of the smell but this is great for him.

Thanks everyone. Do all vets do nexgard and bravecto and will they prescribe without a flea infestation?

Nexgard is great. You don't need a flea infestation either. Advocate is good for cats. Frontline is rubbish, you're right.

The same thing had happened to me and my friend we just used advantage from the key store vet strength and I noticed the smell comes out of his mouth at night after I give it and same thing happened to me twice and I sold a tube to my friend who said the same thing it is kinda scary and I take it as a red flag but I spent almost 90$ on these treatments which they say to apply monthly o don’t I just use it when I see them .

My dog used to get a smell when we used Advocate , it also made his coat really greasy . We now use Bravecto ( tablet 3 monthly) and milpro ( monthly) to cover fleas/ worms/ ticks .
