Cows Hooves

What do people think of cows hooves for a dog chew? specifically for a puppy.
I've read good and bad about them.

My dogs, and our foster pups adore them and we've not had any problems. Just keep an eye for any sharp edges, and I wouldn't use them for a very strong jawed dog

OverFedStanley · 26/03/2019 21:21

ooooooh the smell of wet hooves ........Envy

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 26/03/2019 21:24

Brilliant for teething doggies! Mine have always loved them and never had a problem apart from the smell. OMG wet hooves stink!

Hearthurts · 26/03/2019 21:37

Grin do they really stink?!🤣
I remember our dog years ago having pigs ears to chew on.
Are the ones from Amazon ok? sorry I'm.new to all this, thanks for your help

Usually they aren't too bad, but one of ours likes to bury them in the garden and then dig them back up, and then they do honk.

Pigs ears last about 30 seconds here. Hooves last months and months of gnawing

adaline · 26/03/2019 21:51

They absolutely stink but mine loves them. We stuff them and freeze them.

Hearthurts · 26/03/2019 22:12

what do you stuff them with?! adaline

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 26/03/2019 22:15

@CMOTDibbler frozen raw pig ears last slightly longer. Grin

tabulahrasa · 27/03/2019 00:53

You can get frozen raw cows legs with hooves still attached (they’re not whole legs, just halfway up the shin)

They last quite well... and they don’t half freak out your neighbours when your dog wanders past with it, lol

Hearthurts · 27/03/2019 06:58

😱frozen cows legs you say?!
OMG I've entered into another world buying this puppy. The smelliest thing I've ever bought for a pet is a packet of cheese Dreamies🤣

adaline · 27/03/2019 07:03

@Hearthurts we use loads of different things - cream cheese, peanut butter, pate, apple sauce, mashed bananas, yoghurt or even just wet food or biscuits in gravy.

2dogsandPG · 27/03/2019 07:09

We call them poo-bones because of the smell 🤢 Dogs love them though. Ours had them from about 3 months. Occasional peanut butter dollop in there as an extra treat!

Hearthurts · 27/03/2019 07:42

yum! Confused
I'm going to order some today, thanks everyone

We have various animal parts but he usually buries them after a few mins, I restrict to the garden as they stink

littlemeitslyn · 27/03/2019 08:55

What happened to the cow ?

werideatdawn · 27/03/2019 21:11

Well hopefully the cow is dead otherwise there's a hoofless one somewhere...

werideatdawn · 27/03/2019 21:12
Grin Oh and our girl loves all random animal bits. Snout is a current favourite!
DogInATent · 27/03/2019 21:24

Put an old trainer over the hoof, see if that freaks them out any less.

Hearthurts · 27/03/2019 23:53

Grin I bought a couple of hooves in the pet shop, and came across a stuffed trachaeaShock

“Put an old trainer over the hoof, see if that freaks them out any less.”

Lol, dunno, she was a bit disturbed by chicken feet too...

I found it quite amusing tbh as she eats meat and I don’t, and she was the one bothered by random animal parts.

Trachea don’t last long IME, unless you’ve a really small dog I suppose, but mine just ate them in about 2 minutes.

LeesPostersAreInFrames · 28/03/2019 01:19

I'm just here too insert the standard warning that if you feed your dogs peanut butter, make sure it's not one that contains xylitol.

Hearthurts · 28/03/2019 06:41

thanks lees I have a quite runny peanut butter that is 99.5% peanuts and .5% salt
The make is 'pics' it's delicious!

OP posts:
adaline · 28/03/2019 07:12

I wouldn't give one that contains any salt at all - dogs don't have the same tolerance to it as we do.

I use Meridian which is 100% peanuts.

Hearthurts · 28/03/2019 07:30

ok thanks adaline
silly question but does it matter if it's smooth or crunchy?! i

Our local poundstretcher had dog peanut butter for about £1.60, the exact same one is in Pets at Home for a pound more.
