Puppy won't move with coat on

Hi,
We have a 6 month old miniature schnauzer. She gets wet on walks and gets quite shivery and takes a while to warm up. Get a coat I thought.

Got one and it is a little big and she just stops dead when it's on. She doesn't seem distressed, just won't move an inch until it's off.

Ordered an Equafleece which arrived today - same thing. No movement what so ever. Her head dips and she freezes for a full five minutes until I take it off.

Should I persevere? Will she get used to it? I don't want her getting cold :(

Mines the same, but it's usually the kids dressing her up!

I have a seven month old mini schnauzer-puppies struggle to regulate their body temperatures so the coat is useful.
Mine shivered for an hour after her walk this am-
(even though she was wearing her lovely equafleece jumper)

Awaits slating by Cheripie.......

You mis understand me.
If you want to let kids dress your dogs up like a dolly, its not my concern.
I just said I wouldn't with my dogs, and they dont have unnecessary coats either.

That's baloney Cheripie64, - I used to have a collie cross whose coat was "double fur" and of course I never bought a coat for her - she patently did not need one and never felt the cold. I now have a smooth coated dog who shivers in cold temperatures, but not if she has a suitably warm coat on. Nothing to do with fashion.

My shorthaired, somewhat balding standard dachshund doesn't like walking with anything on. But he's fine so long as he's moving. He doesn't often get wet - dislikes walking in rain and avoids puddles. If we're going to be stopping for lunch somewhere exposed like the top of a mountain, we'll take his equafleece to pop on him while we're stopped. It's the dachshund specific cut which doesn't have 'sleeves', I've no idea why he doesn't like walking in it.

Ddog always does a fantastic daily mail sad face when he wears his equafleece. It’s weird he just powers down when I put it on but is fine once we’re out walking.

My small but very hairy dogs get cold and shivery and need jumpers and coats, sometime even indoors when its really cold.

I shamelessly buy my dogs nicely patterned jumpers and coats because I like them looking cute. When I see that they are cold I grab a jumper and they run up to me and sit nicely with heads straight up and eyes closed to I can put them on!

We could all give all of our disposable income to homeless dogs, do you cheri?

LadyLuna16 · 02/02/2019 15:41

Well after all that we have hit a major problem. Dog wore it on walk today, got home and she it has completely matted her fur. On her belly and particularly in her armpits (or whatever they are on dogs). I have spent nearly as hour combing them out and there are still some there. Have given her a break :(

I think I will leave her be. I feel awful.

overstory
I do donate to dogs charities, not all my disposable income, no.
But I also dont buy my dogs, silly jumpers or coats, they are dogs, not dress up
dollies.
They have fur, not hair.
As the original poster found out, it is uncomfortable for them as well.

BiteyShark · 02/02/2019 18:37

We have our spaniel clipped short so in the winter I do worry about him feeling cold. However, today he ran around whilst I was freezing and not once did he shiver so I figure he is fine and gets straight back into the car with the heater on. He simply won't tolerate a coat or jumper.

I think it all depends on the type of walks as well. If we were trudging along the pavement at a low speed I can imagine on days like today mine would feel cold. However we mostly do off lead walks and he gets warm running about as he never stands still.

Springerfan · 04/02/2019 17:53

Funnily enough i had a dog walker lecture me today as i don't have a coat for my Springer. She told me 'you wouldn't bring a baby out on a day like this without a coat! I work with dogs so i know'
Last time I checked, babies aren't covered with fur..
Annoyingly, one of her dogs jumped up and licked my sandwich as she was busy advising me but that's another thread!

OnlyToWin · 04/02/2019 18:02

Ah OP Miniature Schnauzers are terrible for matting, especially in the tummy area. We have found the only thing which works is something called “Cowboy Magic” which cost about £18 from Amazon. You massage it into the mat then comb through with a metal toothed comb. My dog still hates the process though.

He also wears a little coat when it is really cold, not for fashion, but for warmth, especially when his coat has been clipped. He does a good musical statues impersonation when he is wearing it for the first minute, but associates it with running around in the woods so this does not last long.

LadyLuna16 · 04/02/2019 18:13

Thanks OnlyToWin - Can I ask what coat you have?

We have got most of the matts out, but I am taking her to the groomer on Friday to get the rest out.

I got in touch with Equafleece and they are going to refund me which I think is very good of them.

She got very wet today as it's been raining all day, but ran around a lot and seemed OK so will see how she goes.

We’ve got an Ancol Muddy Paws one in size medium. It has a fleece lining and a mat outer layer. It goes over his head and it has elastic that goes around the back legs, then it has a wide strap that Velcros under his tummy to keep the coat secure. It is always the part that his coat does not cover which mats up the most. His chest area which the coat protects does not get matted.

totallyliterally · 04/02/2019 18:25

Mine has an equafleece (they're brilliant) and given the choice would be a statue too. But with the temptation of lovely treats and then going to her favourite woods she forgets it's on. Till you get home and then will return to a statue until removed
