Dog-friendly holidays?

Please can you suggest dog-friendly holidays you've really enjoyed?

After a long period of 'planning' we think the time is right to seriously look into getting a puppy. We think this summer it would be a good idea to do a dog-friendly holiday in the UK, not least because Darling Daughter won't want to be separated from Darling Dog!

I assume hiring a cottage might be the way forward? Can you recommend anywhere in particular please? It will be a very different for us, so any advice welcomed!

I don't want a rescue dog this time. My first dog, a rescue had to be PTS about 15 years ago. I never took her on holiday because her issues were so ingrained that she didn't cope well with change - or loud noises, people in uniform, the smell of glue or household chemicals etc etc etc. She was a lovely dog and totally worth all the hard work, but it's a puppy for DD this time. This dog has been planned and prepared for. My rescue was not planned at all - my DGF 'removed her' from an awful situation and brought her to me. He was a lovely man.

Plan and prepare fine. But I couldn’t countenance being selfish enough to buy from a disreputable breeder. Go through the breed club and be prepared to wait. It’s the only ethical way to buy a puppy.

What breed of dog are you getting, and when is the litter due?

I would make sure you contact the owners about how dog-friendly they actually are. Lots will allow dogs but won't allow them on beds or furniture, or upstairs etc. Nothing wrong with that, of course, but young puppies who are allowed on furniture and beds at home may not understand the difference and you don't want to spend your holiday worrying about dog hair on the furniture.

We have stayed in a gorgeous house called New York Public Library in Richmond N. Yorks. It’s my favourite place ever and dog friendly. They also have some beautiful cabins surrounding a lake called Brompton Lakes.

Eagle Brae in Scotland are lovely huge log cabins but they are v. pricey (for us anyway!)
