My dog has a cold!

Poor little mite has a runny nose and sounds quite bunged up! I wasn't aware until now that dogs could catch a cold but that's exactly what it sounds like.

He doesn't appear to have a cough and has already had his kennel cough vaccination not long ago so I don't think it's that. However, he was in dog daycare for a few days last week whilst DP worked away so he may well have picked something up there.

So far he's eating, drinking, toileting and playing just like normal so I'm not concerned enough to head straight to the vets just yet.

Is there anything anyone can recommend giving him to help 'unclog'? I've heard honey may be an idea!

Kennel cough is usually a cough rather than a runny nose.

If you put pressure on his trachea (a gentle pinch on either side of it) it should stimulate a cough response)

A discharge from his nose without a cough is more likely something else. Is it from both nostrils or just one? Is it clear or green? Is he snorting and trying to clear it?

I think we definitely have a case of Kennel Cough on our hands.

He's started tonight with a deep sort of honking noise/cough.

I assume if he's okay in every other way then I can just keep an eye on him for now?

Oh I'm so worried about him now!! Sad

OH thinks I'm being dramatic considering he is currently legging it around the house chasing the cat after scoffing his tea as normal!

KC coughs do sound very dramatic. If it was my dog I wound phone the vets tomorrow for advice.

Wolfiefan · 11/12/2018 20:46

Worth a phone call. Daft question but what breed is your pup?

TinaTurnipp · 11/12/2018 20:55

He's a cocker spaniel Wolfie.

Ok ignore me! It’s just some deep chested breeds (so not yours!) are prone to pneumonia with kennel cough. I always panic about the chance of mine getting it.
My mum’s terrier had a couple of bouts. High temp once. She had it both with and without the vaccination.
And it can be picked up on a walk, at the park etc etc. Doesn’t have to be a kennel or daycare setting.
Hope pup feels better soon.

TinaTurnipp · 12/12/2018 07:27

Well he's still coughing and full of snot this morning but had a good sleep on our bed last night (spoilt).

He's still eating and drinking perfectly well so hopefully we will get away with just a phone call rather than a visit to the vets!!

If for any reason you do need to take him in then say why. My vet won’t let dogs with kennel cough into a consulting room!
Hope he’s better soon.

TinaTurnipp · 12/12/2018 08:09

Thank you!

The discharge from his nose isn't much but when it does show it is completely clear. Just like extra wet if that makes sense?

Poor turnippup vet might want to see him I would phone them and see what they suggest clear snot is supposed to be better isn't it ?

BiteyShark · 12/12/2018 08:31

Definitely call and explain what is wrong.

When my dog had suspected KC I just told reception I was here and I would be in the car just in case it was infectious and they called me straight through when it was my turn so no waiting with any other dogs.

WitcheryNights · 12/12/2018 09:03

Kennel cough can exhibit other symptoms, not just cough. One common symptom is runny nose and sneezing. Be aware that dogs can be harbouring kennel cough for up to 10-14 days before symptoms appear!

TinaTurnipp · 12/12/2018 14:54

Rang the vet. They've said so long as he's perky and his normal self then to just keep an eye on him. The fact he had his vaccination is good as even though it doesn't prevent KC completely (clearly!), It helps to prevent his symptoms from becoming severe.

They weren't too considered at the moment from what I described so that's made me feel better :)

Concerned not considered!
