Dog bit postman

Hi I have a two year old pug who I always shut in the living room when I answer the door to the postman however I can't have shut it properly as he got out and jumped up at him and bit him on his knee. The postman showed me his leg luckily it had not broken the skin but there was a red mark. He only seems to act like this when he sees the postman, in the street he barks when he sees him and I pull him away but doesn't bark at other people but I need to do something about it

I got my dog back in and went out and apologised to him and he said he is off to the doctors and will have to put in a complaint.

Does anyone know what might happen now? I feel so bad for the postman who was just doing his job and must have been scared and i am worried about my dog. It's my fault I should have made sure he was away.

It doesn't help I've been up all night with my 6 month old I just want to sit and cry.

My dog loves people a bit too much sometimes and will jump up through excitement so if someone knocks on the door unexpectedly I make sure to put her in the kitchen first where I have a tall stair gate (comes up to my elbows and I'm 5ft5). Even if I'm expecting someone but I know they aren't keen on dogs then I'll put her on her lead so I have control of her till she calms down then she just wants to sniff them but will leave them alone.

I think I am going to get a stair gate too and just triple check next time that he can't get out into the hallway.

Good idea. We have an inner door which works well - except once when DD was small and we had a nanny, our previous dog (a dachshund) slipped out when she answered the door, and nipped the postman (through his trousers, afaik no damage to them or his leg). We got a warning letter to say that if it happened again they might not be able to deliver to our house. That seemed entirely fair and sensible.

It amazes me how many people will come to the front door and open it allowing a dog to poke its nose out or worse still, get outside

Oh god, this is us. My dopey Labrador simply has to charge out and see whoever is at the door. I think when people knock at my door all they can hear is me bellowing over his barking for him to get in his bed. Which he does and then I open the door and he hears a voice and he comes barrelling out. He wouldn’t hurt a fly but he is big and black and probably a bit intimidating, he’s got a big bark. I do tell him to leave it and get in his bed. He doesn’t appear to be getting it. I’m going to have to shut the hall door and disappoint him. Grin
