Whether to take on rescue greyhound

A greyhound’s temperament seems just right for us and it appears there are lots that need homes.
I’ve spoken to the rescue centre and they’ve told me the dogs are not house trained, so now I’m having doubts about what I could be getting myself into. How difficult is it to get them to toilet outside, as that’s my main concern? I always knew having a dog would be a commitment but I’m wondering whether I’m cut out for full on dog training!
Any thoughts much appreciated.

Mine is covered in bald patches they can suffer doggy alepecia so she has bald thighs she also has a few round bald bits these have been from dogs nipping her.
As said they have very thin skin so where most dogs it wouldn't show on a grey it will break the skin and scar.

Hmm, it didn't really look like that although it actually was in the area - it was a white line of shaved going all the way around the elbow with a slightly larger rectangle of fur off at the front (hard to explain!). The circle on the rump was literally the size of a burn mark.

He said that he had British markings (no idea about this at all I'm afraid) but he was from Ireland - wasn't a racer as he seems to have little to no chase instinct which is why they think they sent him off quite young (2yo).
Only other worry I have is how much clutter there is around the house when I look at it from doggy POV. I read about the butter dishes being swiped...ours is quite far back but am assuming this needs to be moved along with the fruit bowl? What about dd's toys? Is it good to have a stair gate so he can't just help himself to her soft toys upstairs?

Sorry OP i've completely hijacked the thread! Shock Grin

He may have given blood, greyhound blood is used regularly as they are a universal donor I think? My boy used to give blood when he was in kennels.

I posted a pic up thread of Sam, he was exactly 2 when we got him. He'd been in kennels 6 months. Failed racer and horribly mistreated apparently.

He's a big dopey monster. He will steal any food if you turn your back but is VERY good at not hassling you at the table.

He's incredibly biddable and does as he's told.

Our grey won't attempt the stairs in the house and we've never encouraged him to (most will have never seen them before and are too awkwardly shaped to get up and down them). He will use steps outside but only if he's in the lead! As for things on worktops, just keep them pushed back and discourage him if he shows an interest.

Late to the party but I have two rescue greyhounds, best thing we ever did adopting them.

Such a gentle breed. Easy to house train, of course we had a few accidents but neither had ever been in a house before but they want to keep their home clean so pick it up quickly.

My advice would be talk to a couple of rescues. Be completely honest about your situation. The better information the rescue has the better they can match you to the right hound. I would also go to a specialist rescue as they really know the greys very well.

Xxx

sexnot I saw the pic of Sam - gorgeous looks so peaceful! The dog we looked at today is a black too Smile. I've so many questions still...maybe I should start another thread tomorrow - so so sorry OP! Blush Thank you all for your lovely pics, advice and stories!

It took 1 week exactly for my retired greyhound to be house trained. With very few accidents. Just by rewarding him when he toileted outside. :) he was 3 when we got him.
