John Lewis is now dog friendly!

Apparently it’s a soft launch,
Well behaved dogs on leads are now allowed in all John Lewis stores.
I’m not certain if any of the cafe areas have designated areas for dogs, as there isn’t any information online.
There may also be difficulties if the store is accessed via a shopping centre that only allows guide / assistance dogs.
A brave but great move by JLP - I’m just off to visit my nearest store!

Transdog anyone?! 😂🐶

ShatnersBassoon · 05/11/2018 18:19

You know, dogs don't give a shit about anything but food!

And good quality made to measure curtains.

BiteyShark · 05/11/2018 18:23

There is no way on earth I would take BiteyDog into JL. First he would be overwhelmed with the smells and people and I can honestly see him bashing into the nice crystal glass displays and me handing over my credit card feeling very embarrassed. A wiggly over friendly spaniel in a shop is not a good idea Grin

timetodothis · 05/11/2018 18:24

I don’t want to be shopping with my toddler and worrying about dogs,

This.
They may gain the odd dog owner but will lose customers who have children. Children are eye level with dogs. It will be intimidating for them.
Toddlers instinctively grab at tails and it won't be long before someone is bitten and JL gets the ass sued off them.

Bad move all round.

timetodothis · 05/11/2018 18:26

Transdog anyone?!

I'm going to take my cat in. Dressed as a dog.

If anybody says anything I will say, well she feels like a dog today and is wearing dog clothes,so must be a dog.

JaiNotJay · 05/11/2018 18:28

Totally ridiculous, and if it's true I'll be contacting them to complain. I don't think dogs should be allowed in any shops.

Whitney168 · 05/11/2018 18:29

It won't last long, by the time several dogs have pee'd up their upholstery showrooms.

I love dogs, by the way, but am very familiar with how blind many owners seem to be to what their dog is lifting its leg against. Can't see the need for it, and can't see it going well.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 05/11/2018 18:30

I’m 😵at this. I think 1/3 of the population have some sort of allergy to animals. Mine is very severe.

And their staff will have similar numbers who are also allergic to them.

So in terms ofHealth and Safety and Equality they are potentially discriminating against disability in their work force. As well as making them ill.

Have they actually done a risk assessment on this?😲

MuffinMad · 05/11/2018 18:33

The Pets At Home store by me is dog friendly.

I have been in with the dog on occasion and the piddle puddles are a fair few, the dog being a dog, smells it and follows through with a small one.
I think it would only take one dog to do the same in John Lewis before they're all doing it!

I don't think it's a good idea.

😕

missyB1 · 05/11/2018 18:36

Excellent news, hope that;s goes for the cafe areas as well.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/11/2018 18:41

Echoing pp on this - does anyone have a link? It sounds a little unlikely...

MorningsEleven · 05/11/2018 18:42

I'm sure my dog would love going round John Lewis - we could shop for lipstick and try on shoes but I dunno how I'd get a greyhound up the escalator.

www.whtimes.co.uk/news/dogs-allowed-in-to-welwyn-garden-city-john-lewis-1-5765088

To be rolled out in all stores by next year.

helacells · 05/11/2018 18:42

That's bloody awful

EdWinchester · 05/11/2018 19:02

That’s my nearest JL!

Starlight345 · 05/11/2018 19:04

Well that’s a shop I will avoid

olderthanyouthink · 05/11/2018 19:54

@timetodothis
I've become a mad dog lady since getting my Westie and have spent silly amounts of money in Heals Batley cos I can take my dog in

Danglingmod · 05/11/2018 20:01

What a ridiculous idea. They'll lose hundreds of customers - people with allergies, people with small children and people who are really scared of dogs.

Dogs should not be in shops that sell clothes or fabrics nor in places that sell food.

The country is going insane.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 05/11/2018 20:02

I really can't imagine it lasting very long when they realise how much extra cleaning and stock wastage there is.

TheWiseWomansFear · 05/11/2018 20:18

I love dogs but I don't want to buy clothes and then discover theyve got dog hair on them...

Ameliarose16 · 05/11/2018 20:25

I hate it that people are just expected to love
Dogs and if you dont you're the most evil person ever. I don't want to go into John Lewis and be surrounded by dogs. Why is it necessary to take your dog shopping in the first place

notthegreenduck · 05/11/2018 20:33

Our town has self designated itself “Britain’s friendliest town for dogs” so they are allowed everywhere here. One in a “family friendly” restaurant p@&*ed all over the floor. No one seemed that bothered 😕! The daft owners just laughed it off and it took a bit of time for anyone to mop it up. By which time it had nicely soaked into the wooden floor.

We have never been back!!!!!

Also dog biscuits put out everywhere are tempting to the kids who get confused as a clothing chain also has human biscuits out. Had to stop DS making a beeline for the doggy treats 🤢 🤮

adaline · 05/11/2018 21:16

Sounds good. Pretty much every single shop here allows dogs, it's brilliant. It's very much an outdoorsy/tourist/caravan/camping region so I suppose it makes sense, as lots of caravan parks/campsites/hotels don't allow dogs to be left unattended.

I think there's one shop in the town I work in that doesn't allow dogs - everyone comments on it! They still do very well but it's extremely noticeable. Most dogs have water bowls and dog biscuits behind the counters and the dogs are the centre of attention - they get loads of fuss and attention. My puppy loves a day around the shops - he gets biscuits and loads of attention!

adaline · 05/11/2018 21:19

Loads of clothes shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants already allow dogs in, especially in tourist towns. This is only big news because John Lewis is a department store.
