Happy tail not so happy now...

Almost 2 weeks ago our dog hit a wall while out walking and got a small cut on his tail. We cleaned with salt water and it scabbed over.
Over the next few days it kept opening up again everytime he wagged his tail so we bandaged it up to stop this. However it carried on bleeding when he hit have tail on anything so we ended up going to the vets.

His wound is now infected and he is on a course of antibiotics. We have to keep his tail bandaged to protect it. But daily take off the bandage to clean it and put on a clean bandage.

He's been on antibiotics 2 days and if anything the wound looks worse. It's still weeping and bleeding and looks white and pussy.

The vet mentioned if it doesn't get better he may need it amputating which I am torn about.

On one hand he loves his tail. It's so long and pretty and I love to see dogs of his breed (Weimaraner) with their tails. Also it's a major operation.

But on the other hand this is the 2nd time he has split his tail but the first time healed fine. He's likely to do it again and be in pain again. It could be better in the long run and prevent a lot of pain.

The kids think his small tail is so cute and now refer to it as the booty wiggle lol....he's still very waggy.

Really glad he's ok and at least he shouldn't be able to hurt it again.

at a cost of £1200

My cockers cost less than £350 (Inc pain meds for after and multiple check up appointments)!!! But I had no insurance on him and in my experience vets charge less for uninsured animals. But still that's a hell of a difference - are you in a more expensive part of the country like South East?

Nope were north.

He's a big dog so obviously costs more with more drugs....but that is a lot of difference.

He will also have about 5 follow up appointments to change his dressing and we've been given extra in case it falls off (again).

I have 2 Weimaraners who have happy tail syndrome on and off. When it's bad, I use some pipe lagging and tape it on. It's slit open on one side so air gets in & it's pretty light weight.

Glad it all turned out ok With amputation OP. Can sympathise with the amount of blood they produce!

So we've had an eventful few days.saturday he was left 15 mins while getting DC ready for their clubs and the little bugger managed to get around his cone and pull off his bandage and eat it. Cue emergency vet trip to cover it again. Got back in car and it was knocked again so back in for another dressing change... This time with some gauze which creates a clot.
Sunday was his booked appointment so he had another dressing change. Although it bleeds when he knocks it...the stitches are fine and it looks good. He also sicked up the bandage so that was a good thing...lol

They are a nightmare. Mine has eaten bandage labelled “non chew” and a child’s slipper sock I tried to use instead. We now have a muzzle and a cone for extreme situations. Blush

Well he has opened one of his stitches so nurse is going to speak to a vet about whether he needs to go back under anaesthetic to have another stitch in.

Oh I hope not. Fingers crossed. One of my naughty torties pulled stitches out and had to be stapled. Shock
