Doggie daycare in kennels. 6mo puppy?

Been looking for a doggy daycare/dog walker and I'd been looking and found a dog walker for £15 per day, or a doggie day care for £25 per day. Unfortunately the day care was 40 minutes in the complete wrong direction to our jobs so the cost of fuel and daycare itself 4 days a week was just not possible for us at the moment.

DH has come home all proud of himself as he's found a boarding kennels 10 minutes away that charges £10 per day for doggie daycare. I just don't feel good at all about it being a kennels.. their Facebook page looks great lots of photos of dogs on walks and good reviews from owners but it's just the fact when he isn't being walked he'll just be in a kennel on his own. When I imagined doggy daycare I was imagining him curled up on someone's sofa having lots of fuss.. am I being over the top? We were all set to go ahead with the dog walker, but if this is the better option I don't want to make the wrong call because of my preconceptions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated (but please can no one tell me to rehome him this time!)

In case it's relevant he's a 6 month old Cav puppy.

Have you heard of Borrow My Doggy? I really don't know much about it but you could have a look? A card in the local post office asking if any retirees would like to have him for the day whilst you're at work? Some people would love a dog but couldn't afford it or want the full time responsibility. Obviously you would have to vet them. We had a mini dachshund that I couldn't bear to leave and I understand the heart ache. It caused me so much stress it really was easier (and kinder) to have him adopted. We used to have regular cards from his new owners so I knew he had gone to the right place. I hope you find the right answer for you all.

I wouldn’t use Borrow my Doggy. No references taken I don’t think.

Mine goes to daycare in someone's home - he loves it. There's a maximum of six dogs and three carers (a family) - it's £10 a day and he's knackered when he comes home!

He gets two walks a day but otherwise he just fits into their daily life which is just what we wanted to happen.

@adaline That sounds perfect, unfortunately nothing like that is available near me.

I think you have to just do the best you can but be prepared to change if it doesn't suit your dog. Personally I believe there are worst things than leaving your dog alone for a few hours and you are doing everything you can to minimise that god knows why people said rehome him on the other thread as if that isn't traumatic for any dog

We got very lucky with ours, I have to admit. It helps that we're in a cheap part of the country too, I suspect.

I will just say (to back up Bitey) that there's nothing wrong with leaving a dog for a few hours a day. It might not be ideal but there are worse fates out there - I'm sure a dog would rather live in a warm home with food, treats, toys and cuddles than be stuck in a kennels for the rest of it's life.

Dogs are companion animals, yes, but they don't need to be stuck with us 24/7.

A very happy update.. via Tailster we have found a lovely woman who will do doggy daycare in the same town as I work for an amazing price. It's in her home, with other small breeds, one hour walk a day and lots of cuddles and play for the other hours he's there. So happy I could actually cry. We met her this morning for coffee and to go through all the details and she was so lovely and so good with him.

I can't tell you how relaxing it is knowing that your dog is at daycare whilst you are at work. At the right daycare I think they get so much more out of it other than just company especially if there are a few other friendly dogs that they can interact with.

You can relax now Grin

I think you should give up work and be a stay at home parent. I'm surprised you're even thinking about abandoning your child dog and going out to work. In case you decide to go for the daycare out of your area, have you considered a doggie taxi? You'll also need to remember to add on the extra cost for a dog car seat to be on the safe side.

adaline · 02/11/2018 20:53

Oh that's so good! Congratulations.

Mine goes to a wonderful daycare and it's so nice to know that he's taken care of. We don't have to worry about him and if we're running late we know he's happy and won't be getting lonely or destructive or anything like that.
