Puppy humping

My 4.5mo puppy has started humping one of his bigger toys, do we tell him no or just let him get on with it?

We have bonky the bear and humpy the hare. We used to have randy rabbit.

It is a fairly common behaviour. My labrador used to even hump my DD3 when he was a puppy of that age and she was a toddler so it was something I did have to keep a close eye on and grab him to put a stop to it.

It was a behaviour that did largely stop once he had been neutered, though your puppy is too young for that. I was forced to have mine done just before he turned a year old because he had already taken to going off (and some distances too) after in-season bitches. I would rather have waited another few months until he was more mature, but it wasn't to be.

I now have a 13 year old cocker spaniel bitch (spayed) and my labrador. The cocker will now hump the labrador when he is trying to sleep, so has to be sent to her own basket.

By the way, said labrador is now an old man at 14. DD3 is 16 and doesn't really remember it.

So do I tell him no?

my neutered dog still humps his soft toy on occasions, i let him get on with it
however i do stop him trying to hump other dogs tho

I persevered with stopping him humping my then toddler for obvious reasons and he did. I had limited success with other things though and apart from stopping him humping other dogs I left him to his toys.

He no longer humps anything now. At 14 he is old and creaky and his back legs are no longer so willing for him.

Just try and distract him with something else
