Dog bites dog - who pays vet bill?

Not sure of the etiquette here.

Was walking my dog off lead on country footpath. Another dog came along for some mutual bottom sniffing - then sunk its teeth into my dog.

Should the owners of the bitey dog pay my vet bill?

The vet cleaned the wound, snipped off a piece of flesh and gave us antibiotics and something to clean the wound with daily. The bill was about £50. I'm not going to ring the owner because I just can't face the hassle.

My body language is now making it clear to other dog owners to keep their off-lead dogs away from me. To be honest, I get bored with the small talk encountered on dog walks when I just want a nice relaxing walk with my hound Smile

I never got a dog for the 'social' side so totally understand that. When I am out with my dog it's me and him and I don't want to talk to anyone else.

Hope your dog recovers quickly.
