Can I take my dog to the vet because he smells funny?

For the last few days I’ve noticed this horrible smell off my dog. It isn’t a farty dog smell. He hasn’t rolled in anything. I’ve checked him all over and there are no cuts or anything clinging to him. The smell seems to be coming from his head but I can’t pinpoint where from exactly. It doesn’t appear to be from his mouth or ears. It’s just there. I can’t exactly describe other than to say it doesn’t smell healthy.

Thanks everyone, he’s booked to go in this evening.

Not exactly sure what finegans point is. We have no idea what the smell is caused by, it could be something stuck in his nose. Something that I know for a fact can happen to cross breeds.

My dog with her stinky anal glands is a cross breed so boo yah sucks to you Finegans!

@IStandWithPosie Can I ask what the outcome was at the vets? Think I have a similar problem with my puppy and am wondering what to do. Thanks

Finegan - take that chip off your shoulder and feed it to your dog.
Teeth, food/debris in teeth, ears, skin, bum can all stink. We had a shitzu whose face used to stink of stale pee because he was always sniffing on walks and his nose, being short, meant his hair dragged in whatever he had sniffed. Totally vile.
If you have washed your dog thoroughly all over (including head) and the smell is still there, I think a vets advice might be useful.

I forgot to update!

No source found. Teeth, ears, skin and bum all fine. Vet says just give him a bath Blush The smell is much less noticeable but still there today. I haven’t bathed him yet.

I reckon he has rubbed on something whilst out walking and it’s taking its time to wear off. Bath tomorrow evening.

My dog once came home STINKING!!!
Muck had been spread on the fields. She has been playing with a dog that has been eating it. (Grim!) The stench was disgusting.

Pebblespony · 17/10/2018 21:49

Ours rolls in fox poo. It's horrible. Gag-inducing. We've also been the victims of an 800 euro teeth bill so glad it's not that.

Wolfiefan · 17/10/2018 21:57

Ouch at the bill. At least there’s nothing sinister going on OP.

IStandWithPosie · 17/10/2018 22:02

I know wolfie I kept waiting for him to tell me he had found something and would have to put him under to investigate!

No investigations needed here. D dog has had tripe today. She’s lying on her back with her legs in the air and her bum pointing at me. Rancid farts.
If I pass out it would be a blessed relief.

She’s turned round. I’m not comatose yet! Grin

Mine rolls and came in this morning after rolling in fox poop before I had even had a cup of tea, it is not a good start to the day.
