Chicken and rice for greyhound with diarrhoea - how much??

DDog got the runs on Sunday night. She's seen the vet twice, has had meds and it all seems to be under control so I'm not too worried about it. Her poos are starting to firm up and she's eating well - has been the whole time.

She's got to be kept on a bland diet for the next 4-5 days, then gradually get her back on her normal food. Vet prescribed some probiotics to add to her food.

She's ready to go back to 'normal' amounts of food, just very bland food. But I can't find any guidance anywhere about how much of the bland food I should be giving her! Vet was also a bit vague but I didn't think to ask for specifics as DDog was still poorly then & I was only giving her small amounts anyway.

My main worry now is trying to make sure she doesn't get too skinny. Any idea at all about how much I should be feeding her? I can't find any details about how many calories her usual food contains so I can't go on that. No information about, for example, roughly how many calories, or grams of meat/carbs per kg a lazy greyhound should be getting a day.

I can play it by ear but as she's been on short rations since Monday, and has another 5 days plus 4-5 days of gradually reintroducing her normal food, I'd rather have some way of working out that she's getting an approximation of her normal intake.

Anyone got any advice? She's a normally healthy, typically lazy 6-year old retired racer, 29.4kg (though she was 29.6 last week and is already showing more rib).

Just watch with the chicken, it made my dog worse, we used plain white fish and rice

Will do. She did a small but relatively normal poo this morning (bet you're delighted to know that!) so I'm hoping she's getting back on track now.

I'm with Agentornika - watch the chicken - mine had been eating it for years and then suddenly was intolerant and after researching that's not uncommon.
I gave mine a whole Uncle Bens pouch of rice plus a pouch of Ella's Kitchen Beef/Lamb/Sausages baby food, twice per day. That was when I was trying to settle her. I might have considered 3 a day, for anything longer than short term - you'll notice if she puts on too much weight and can adjust her food down a little if necessary, afterwards.
I found recommendations re baby food for dogs online - it's easily digestible for babies and therefore good for dogs too - for the protein. I avoided chicken recipes and gave her the lamb/pork and beef. Obviously not the fruit ones.
She loved it :)

I buy Hills Prescription Diet food for mine to recover from diahorrea or vomiting. Bit pricey, but it’s not needed for long, and has a feeding guide on the bag. It’s as bland as chicken and rice, and very digestible, according to my vet. Seems to work for my two!

I found that advice really unhelpful as like you I had no idea how much to give.

My dog has frequent bouts of diarrhoea due to a stomach condition and what I now do is to feed his normal food but divide it up so he gets his portions every hour which tends to be much better than swopping to a random amount of 'chicken and rice'. Then over the following days I feed him every 2 hours then every 3 until he is back to his usual feeding times.

Thanks all Thanks

I think I'll do a combination of your advice & switch to white fish with no chicken while I gradually reintroduce her normal food, and split it up into several meals a day until we're back to normal.

She's on the mend but I think she's actually pretty hungry which can't be helping her to feel better now she's over the bug itself.

She's also really missing her treats - I'm keeping a bowl of cold cooked pasta in the fridge instead, but I'm not sure how much longer a chilled piece of penne is going to be an acceptable substitute Grin
