Those whose pups didnt have the best toilet training bladders...

Hi all

just a few questions for those whos pups didn't master toilet training at the age of 10 weeks.... looking for a reality check or two please for those who just aren't that way inclinded

My pup (cocker spaniel) is 7 months old. Largely house trained but wasn't great at it despite me deligently following all the rules

We are now at a stage where he will obviously hold it but partly as I still put him out (if awake) every hour or two and he doesn't ask to go out and only goes about 7-8 hours overnight. He has had 2 accidents in the last 5 weeks in the day. Soooo:

• when did your pup ask to go out?
  

• does 2 accidents over 5 weeks still sound in the range of ok and when did they stop fully
  
• when did they stretch longer at night. He can sleep for another hour or 2 after going out for a wee so to extend this would be fab at a weekend.....

Mine (springer) started to ask at about 5 months old, I think. BUT his ask is very subtle. Basically he just sits and looks at me. It can be very easily overlooked.

I wouldn't worry about 2 accidents in 5 weeks from mine. I am trying to remember when Battendog had his final accident. He had a couple at Christmas (6 months old) as everyone was distracted. I think he also had one a month or so afterwards when I neglected to spot him asking.

I got lucky with the overnights, though. He'd do 9+ hours from a pretty early age (4-5 months).

Ours started asking at five months by barking. As he also barks at everything he sees or hears that doesn’t always work.
I wouldn’t expect a dog of any age to go more than seven or eight hours overnight.

We have taught our pup to use the bells you hang on the door handle. She noses them and we can hear when she wants to go out.

Only took her a couple of days to get it. You start by shaking them every time you go out.

I was hugely skeptical but my daughter had read about it. I can't quite believe how good it is. We don't miss her subtle looks. She can tell us.

There are bells that you can buy to train them to alert you that they need to go out. Just hit them every time you go out and they eventually get it!

Ours (21 weeks) uses the training bells. He learnt how to use them really quickly and it definitely speeded the training up. He now barks as well if we're slow to get to the door after he rings the bells. The only downside is that he sometimes rings the bells just because he'd like the door open too , but that's a small price to pay for the convenience of a nice ask to go out.
