Dog coats?

Not the silly parka ones with fur hoods but traditional dog coats. Are they needed in winter? For warmth or just a bit of protection from the rain?
Or unnecessary?

My dog acts like I have chopped off his legs if I put him in a coat. He stands there and refuses to move Grin

I just let him get wet and dirty but then he runs around lots so that helps keep him warm.

My 2 (spaniels) didn't wear jackets out and about but both had drying coats (from Freckles Designs & Equafleece) for after wet walks.

Depends on the dog - I have lurchers who have very fine coats and naturally low body fat so they really need coats in the winter

I think it depends on the dog (or it should do, but some owners do put themselves first!) For some bigger breeds who are really active and have a good layer of fur then they're def not needed and are an uncomfortable hindrance.
We have been advised by our vet to keep our arthritic dog as warm and dry as possible in cold/wet weather, so she is decked out in Equafleece coats from about October - March normally and it does hugely improve her quality of life in the winter. But it is entirely for medical reasons, not vanity on our part.
Def also depends on their personality. Some dogs aren't remotely bothered by rain/wind/mud. Mine refuses to even walk through puddles! How she survived for so long as a stray i'll never know...

My JRT X has short hair and is a wimp in the cold (but was fine in the heatwave... he's talking about retiring to Spain)

He has an Equafleece which did sterling service last year but was insufficient in the snow - after 15 minutes he was visibly shivering. For this year I've added a made-to-measure coat from Dorset Dog Togs, though I haven't had a chance to use it yet.

Umm.. that would have been me this morning. Did the job, kept her back and thighs dry. Got a few smiles from drivers waiting at the level crossing. Has the advantage of having a harness zip-though on the back so it can go over her harness and keep the harness dry.

The dog in the tent is a Staffy, so she's got a really short coat that gives very little protection against the rain.

Mine has equafleece jumpers and coats that he wears when it’s very cold or wet but I have him clipped every 5 weeks so he’s never got much hair and it’s so much easier to keep him clean this way which is important as he sleeps on the beds .

Mine wears a coat in wet weather as she’s small, doesn’t have a very thick coat, and seems to feel the cold quickly when wet. It’s just black with a bit of reflective trim - but it does have a collar thing that covers her neck, which I like because she looks all stylish with her collar turned up - like a little t-bird.

I’m wanting to get an equafleece for the snow, as the snow balls in her hair really quickly and must be so uncomfortable for her.

Equafleece!

They are really brilliant. Stretchy so easy to put on even my hyper dog. Various styles and keep them warm and dry but dog can still fully run around. Wash like a dream too

Probably worth noting that if you're planning to buy an Equafleece and want to have a choice of colours etc., it's worth buying before the cold weather hits. Last year they couldn't keep up with demand and some sizes / colours were out of stock for long periods.

We put our labs in Equafleece jumpers without legs when it's wet and muddy or snowy. Means their bodies don't get covered in mud, so a quick rinse down of the legs under the hose and fleece off and you don't have a massive, stinky wet dog stomping round the house for the rest of the evening. The fleeces dry quickly so a quick rinse if really muddy and onto the radiator to dry. They don't need them for warmth but for ease of cleaning they are awesome.

Mine wears a coat when it is raining. She hates being wet, she hates the rain, she hates puddles, so wearing a coat is the easiest option for her.

One of my Staffs wears a coat when it's really cold. He loves it! He's not really got fur on his belly &. Lose to the ground, so he gets quite cold without it.

Mine is a terrible shit roller, he's 8 now and is very determined that is what he truly wants to do. After a particularly terrible episode involving human shit 💩 i got the half leg cosipet trouser suit.
