Looking at adopting a rescue pup aged 7 months, and thinking about names. The pup I've found is currently Roxy, and I really don't like it! But I don't want to make things confusing for her and will obviously stick with it if that's what's best. I don't want to go too far from her name as that would be too much, but would Rowan be ok? Or Rosie?

as long as the new same sounds like her old one, it should be fine. what about rolo? (thats my dd's favorite name at the mo anyway )

I've found if the ending is kept the same DDog will still respond.

Mine is a Billy so a Y as well, he responds to puppy, baby, silly etc

We do need a photo, that would help.

We called our 7 month old (when we got her) something completely different from what she was previously called. She got it quickly..it doesn't have to sound similar at all.

We changed our rescues name to something that doesn't even sound like her original name and she picked up on it within about a week. 😊

Dogs dont care a jot what they are called and if you change their name.

Make sure every time you say their new name they get a tasty treat they will learn it in hours

Some people advise changing rescue dogs names just routinely anyway, in case they’ve been told off using their name.

Make sure you can shout it clearly, I can’t with Rowan or Rosie tbh, but that might be my accent, lol

My daughter decided to call our dog 'Tinkerbel' one day...just for the day as part of a pretend game. She dutifully answered to it, and also her actual name I think they pick up on other things we do when we call them, tone of voice, etc

It doesn't really matter - they'll associate the new name with you very quickly.

Our rescue girl was taken in as a stray, so the name she'd had for the previous 7-8 years of her life was unknown, the name she'd been given at the shelter was only 2-3 weeks old, and she took to her new name in a couple of weeks.

Pick a name you like, that suits the dog, and that you'll not be embarrassed to shout in public.

Of the 4 rescue dogs I've adopted only one kept his original name. Of the other 3, 1 was a stray so no idea of her history (and name, obviously), and I completely changed the names of the other 2. No issues at all.

I foster pups for a rescue and we often get to name them as they come in. They learn their new name very quickly, though I think its tone of voice mostly. Just repeat, repeat, repeat with lots of fuss and love
