What puppy for small child to train?

Hi all, looking for some advice and should say I'm not a dog owner and know very little about different breeds.
My mum who's in her 60s looks after my 1 year old son while I'm at work. She expressed an interest in getting a puppy. I thought it would be cute if she and my little boy could train it and perhaps start to show the dog when he gets a bit older, it would be a nice hobby for him and my mum. So I suppose I thought it would be worth getting some advice on the right breed of dog to go for re training it and for safety reasons as it will be around a young child. I think my mum fancies a poodle or a beagle. All advice and info welcome!

“but every thread on here has posts saying how awful Beagles are and why you should never get one.”

That’ll be because of the nature of the OPs

It’s pretty much always people new to owning dogs considering really diverse breeds and what they have in common is that they’re a similar size and cute - but with completely different traits.

So when people are looking for an easyish first family pet, people will go, no, not a beagle - because that’s not what they are.

It doesn’t mean beagles aren’t fab, if someone was more suited to them.

If it helps I’d also tell an OP looking for an easyish first time pet to avoid the breed I own as well, not because I don’t think it’s a great breed, but because they’re not likely to do what they want from a dog.

I have a 6 month old DD and a 20 month old dog, I aim to get one decent walk/ focused training session in every weekend just me and my dog, whilst DH looks after our DD. This just about keeps me on top of his essential training needs like recall.

A one year old needs to be out of the way whilst an adult focuses on consistently training the dog

We got a puppy when our youngest was 3 so I could walk and train her whilst he was at nursery.

OP save yourself and your mother the stress, maybe in a few years reconsider

I am negative towards beagles.
Yes they are lovely looking dogs but would only suit someone willing to devote their life to them, walking them and training them and spending every single minute watching them and keeping their brains active.

So therefore about .1% of the world are suitable beagle owners, you are one but I will unlikely ever meet another one. Your beagle is lucky to have you @adaline.

I looked at a beagle as my DH said he liked them. Having investigated the breed I said absolutely no way Grin

Lovely dogs but wouldn't want to attempt to 'train' one.

It's gotta be a typo, no one could think a 1 year old could train a dog?? They're not even trained themselves?

A small child to train a puppy? Is this a joke?

Ah thank you @3luckystars - he's extremely stubborn and can definitely be a challenge but he's also ridiculously loving and absolutely loves his cuddles.

They're definitely not for the faint hearted or for those who just want to do six weeks of puppy classes and that's it. Ours gets daily training exercises, scent exercises and walks to tire him out and it works but you need to do it everyday. Woe betide you if you don't want to go out because it's raining or you're sick or tired!
