My springer is frightened of his own farts! He smells his butt and after he's confirmed that he's made the smell, he leaves the room! He is the joy in my heart though!

It sounds like you're realising now you have perhaps made a hasty decision in choosing this breed with a small terrace and young kids.

You mentioned 'a run' in the garden? Does that mean you intend on kennelling the pup outdoors?

Spaniels crave company so be aware that if that's the case, a lone pup will become very unhappy in that environment.

Springers are essentially working dogs who thrive with an outdoors lifestyle. They're extremely highly strung and have a strong work drive and form strong bonds with their handlers.

The breeder should really have vetted you carefully before allowing you to reserve a pup.

If you are having doubts now then for goodness sake act on it and phone and have a good chat with the breeder and even other reputable breeders first.

Mallory think yourself lucky. Ours emits the most disgusting farts and seems to think we should enjoy them.Grin

I just want to give a few words of reassurance. I got a working Springer and for the first 3-4 months really thought I’d done the wrong thing, hard work and so many nips, bits, scratches.. poo and wee and the zoomies when they race around for nothing... and the constant craving attention... but then our (not his!) training paid off and he’s now at 18 months and SO laid back! He gets an hour off lead and another half hour off but that’s enough, he sleeps calmly the rest of the time, he’s so friendly and placid and not bothered by balls or toys, oh and because he goes in a crate at night with a blanket over, he even sleeps in until we get him up, often past 9 at weekends. It is possible not to have a mad springer. Good luck.

I do wish people would stop using the word crazy with springers. I have three. They are-mostly-angels. Yes, trying as puppies, most dogs are, but once mine have been walked (off lead, loads of ball retrieves, finding the dummy hidden in a hedge etc) they’re FINE! Sleep all day or wander the garden. They’re Velcro dogs and like to be with people. Some, like one of mine, need a job, so he goes training on his own often, he’s never allowed just to run round unsupervised in the park. They generally adapt to your routine, but do ensure you exercise properly. This does not mean hours of walks, mental stimulation is equally important.

Also, remember you can’t overexercise pups, you must be very careful with joints, no stairs, 5 minutes per month of age on the lead, but unlimited off. Don’t push too hard, she needs to have her bones settle. PM me if you want any ideas/help. My old boy is 15 and I have a very naughty younger one, feel free to ask anything.

Yes, they really do spring and bounce Grin And so clever. Ours (passed now) actually trained himself to help me around the house (I'm disabled and often ill) Anything I dropped, he would pick up gently between his teeth and carry to me.Smile

Loving all the spaniel pictures. I have a springer/working cocker cross and agree with everyone else - they can be hard work but I wouldn’t be without him. My favourite thing is long walks or going running with just me and him. My heart melts.
He can be hard work on lead, unless we are going to school or the shops then he is fine. But if he thinks he is going somewhere exciting he is a nightmare, once off lead he is (mostly) a dream - do be prepared to spend hours picking out brambles, grass seed, burrs etc from their fur. He loves water but hates the rain and will hide in his bed if I try and get him out!
At home he is very chilled but does follow me everywhere- normally with a shoe in his mouth. I couldn’t imagine ever being without him now.

That’s so exciting fickle
Have fun, the good times are worth it (and deep breaths through the stressful bits - they soon fade in to distant memories). Enjoy.
And post a picture

Best breed ever. No contest. I've had them forever.

Loyal, child friendly, tolerant, amusing, full of love.

They are amazing dogs! Ours is almost 11, but no one has told him that yet. Working breed, so very driven and needs lots of stimulation. He was a rescue, with a really poor start so we had to put in a lot of work when we got him. One of the things that worked best was sniffer training as it gave him a “job” to do, and we could just treat it as a fun game. He adored it. We’re very careful with him and DS(3) as he’s still just too bouncy, but he’s a cuddly, Velcro mess and I adore him.

I must add, his cloak was removed straight after the picture was taken!
