She is being collected in a few weeks.
She's an English Springer Spaniel.

I need to name her before she gets microchipped.

Any ideas?!

Thankyou

Yes!
Collar tags ordered and everything :)

You shouldn't put a dog's name on a tag, just your surname and contact details. Putting the dog's name makes it easier for a potential thief to call the dog and pass it off as their own. That's the advice we've been given.

Catsrus · 12/08/2018 13:13

Never put the dogs name on a collar - just your contact details.

ASpringerEspanya · 12/08/2018 13:26

I always have. And it's never been an issue. They are ordered and dispatched now. But thanks.

I think we all used to have their names on tags - but the advice now, with the rise in thefts in dogs, particularly of gun dogs, is not to.

ASpringerEspanya · 12/08/2018 17:34

Surely I can't be the only one who doesn't listen to every bit of 'New advice' thrown out there.
My dogs, mum's dogs, my grand dogs all had their name son their collar and I can't think of one instance where something negative came of it.

In fact my grans dog escaped and was found in a back garden, the husband managed to pick him up but he ran away again and under the fence onto a meadow full of nettles. The guy managed to coax him back under the fence by saying his name and called my gran to collect him.

I don't think he would have gone to him if he didn't know his name.

I think people are just trying to be helpful. Dog theft happens and the advice is not to put names on collars. It might be 'new advice thrown out there' but it's sensible advice. If you don't want to listen, don't.

I have the name on the tag because I figure:

  • anyone with bad intentions that is close enough to read the name, already has the dog
  • he doesn't come when I call his name so he's probably not going to for anyone else (we have a different recall command); in fact recall to a name only is tricky because you use their names in some many different contexts than just recall
  • the chances are greater he is lost and found by someone kind, in which case his name could be a useful way for them to reassure him while I get there

As with all advice, read it, consider it carefully and then do what you think is right.
