Hi there

I am getting a new King Charles cavalier puppy next week and have done a lot of research (have had lots of pets over the years, just never a puppy).

I just wondered if anyone has any tips or advice please that may help?

Insurance is a must and if you get a few weeks free do not wait until it expires as most have a 2 week period where you are not covered for illnesses (anything that happens during that time will be considered preexisting from then on)

Get vets sorted for check up and vaccinations/flea/worming etc.

Get booked on puppy courses as they tend to only run at set times.

Crate
bed
toys
head torch for late night toileting
Poo bags
Cleaner for accidents and lots of kitchen towel
Baby gates
Lead, collar, harness and tag

I am sure there is more that I have forgotten.

You will want to use the same food as they are fed by the breeder for a little bit but look on allaboutdogfood.co.uk to compare brands and quality as often the breeders food might not be the best to use long term.

Thank you so much Biteyshark that is great advice, I get 4 weeks insurance but will take her to the vets and arrange insurance the first week. Thank you, I wouldn’t have thought of that. Would you be able to recommend an insurer or should I ask my local vet?

Think I have a head torch from camping and have already bought the other items on your list thank you!

The breeder is giving me the food she has so I will then be able to buy or order the same.

I use petplan. They are expensive but they pay out quickly and they advertise that premiums rise on the age of the dog but not on claims. We have claimed over £4500 and my dog is not even 2 years old (a multitude of accidents and illnesses Sad).

There are some threads on here with other recommendations but I can't comment as I have only ever used petplan.

Whoever you do go to though make sure it is a life cover policy and get the highest vet limit per year you can afford. I only went for £4K per year and seeing how quickly costs can mount up I feel horribly underinsured.

Wow thank you biteyshark I’ll have a look online now, I had no idea it was so important!

Thank you, your advice has been great!

Crocs for you, also a warm and fast to put on dressing gown so you can dive into it during the night.
Torch
Regina Blitz kitchen paper (after extensive experimentation, this is best), Simple Solution pet accident spray
Poo bags
Really good quality interesting treats. I love dried sprats for pups
lots of fleece blankets as much easier to wash than a dog bed
dog door bells - I got mine on Amazon
Lots and lots of patience...

Thank you CMOTDibbler I was thinking about treats! Will also look into a dog doorbell and some crocs Smile
