Flea collars - do they work?

My dog has been scratching around her hind quarters and the top of tail for weeks now. She’s had multiple baths with a flea repellent shampoo, been to the vets to have her glands squeezed and check for anything else and been taking a fish oil supplement. Something is clearly bothering her but I’m at a loss as to what. I was thinking of trying a flea collar in case it is fleas, but I want to know if they actually work. If they have a high success rate and she continues to scratch, then I’ll be able to cross that off.

Have you given any other flea treatments e.g. advocate?

CornishFairing · 30/07/2018 21:48

The bob Martin stuff / supermarket stuff doesn't really work, need advocate x

Flea repellant shampoo has no effect. Only the seresto flea collar is effective the best place for all the others is the hover bag,

Are you / the vet finding fleas?

If you think it is fleas get the vet to prescribe soomething, the non prescription stuff doesnt work

I didn’t try advocate. The vet didn’t spot any but suggested more shampoo 🤔 I’ve ordered a couple of collars online.

The collars I ordered are Beaphar - are they no good? The reviews seemed positive.

Do you regularly use a vet prescribed treatment? My cats are treated monthly with advocate and I'm sure dogs would normally have the same treatment regime

BatteredBitties · 31/07/2018 10:23

I once had a terrible case of fleas in my household (rescued kittens) - absolutely nothing off the shelf worked, would have saved a small fortune if I'd just got the treatment from the vets first. For your home you can get staykill - works brilliant.

If you suspect fleas I would just go with a flea treatment rather than waste money on over the counter stuff.

Have just applied some advocate. Fingers crossed.
