Advice re feeding greyhounds

We have an older greyhound, fussy eater, often can’t be bothered to eat and will frequently leave breakfast for most of the day before deigning to eat it, currently fed on Vets Kitchen dry senior food supplemented with chicken, cheese, tuna, chicken livers, sardines on rotation.

We are adopting a second grey, much younger, two years old, no idea what his eating is like. Thinking about the practicalities of trying to feed two dogs with two different sets of dietary requirements. If we feed the youngster on senior biscuits would he be missing out on nutrients or could we top him up with something extra to account for that?

Also, does anyone know if Vets Kitchen is reasonable quality or would another brand offer a better alternative? Have been researching and finding mixed messages about quality of dry foods - did find a useful website a while back but now can’t find it again. Raw feeding isn’t practical for us as we have little storage space and no freezer.

Have you come across www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk? It's a brilliant independent website that rates dog foods on their nutritional quality.

Vet's Kitchen Senior comes out with a not awful but not amazing 3.7/5 for nutrition www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/dog-food-reviews/0206/vets-kitchen-senior but I bet you could find something that's both a bit cheaper and better quality via that website; to be honest I'd switch both over.

Some dry foods are great, and others are awful (and the same goes for wet), so it's about finding a brand that works for you. It's a shame you don't have a freezer as I would have recommended Butternut Box which is cooked but stored in the freezer.

Thank you. That’s the site I was thinking about Avocadoes - for some reason my bleary brain couldn’t track it down last night. We went from considering a second grey to popping to the shelter to falling for him within an hour yesterday and by last night the panic as to whether we’re doing the right thing had started! We are a bit PFB about our old girl - she was senior when we adopted her and had experienced a much harsher life than most greys do.

I remember being surprised about the score for Vets Kitchen last time I found the site and had been determined then to find something better. I saw a few recommendations for Butternut Box last night on the grey forums. Will have to have a look anyway. Off to peruse that website now

Could you find a good quality food that was for all ages rather than puppy, adult or senior. I presume then that it would be ok to feed to both which might make it better although I suspect you may still need to feed them seperately if the younger one steals all the older ones food in which case you could feed two different types.

I’ve just ordered some Eden. It scores full marks on all about dogs, looks good and can be fed to both age groups. Butternut Box does look fantastic but when I put all the details through their algorithm it came up with £8 a day!

We’re hoping that his arrival will kickstart our existing dog to adopt improved eating habits but we’ll have to monitor her closely. Fingers crossed. Thank you both for your advice.
