What are the best treats to use for puppy training? Need something slightly more appetising than his kibble.

When my boy was a pup was used some natural fishy ones (can't remember what they were called but if you have a Google you'll be able to find plenty). He loved them.

We use training treats, the sort sold from pet stores or the odd cocktail sausage, occasionally a bit of ham

Excitedforxmas · 28/07/2018 12:11

Something like liver , cheese or bits of sausage

You want something:

  • very tasty
  • very quick and easy to eat (no chewing required) to allow quick repititions
  • not massively unhealthy

-Hot dogs sliced into little discs.
-Roast chicken or turkey breast, chopped into tiny pieces
-Tiny (like 3mm x 3mm) cubes of cheese
-Tiny slices of baked liver

Harrington's grain free liver treats or make your own liver cake (aka doggie crack) or tuna cake. Be careful not to overfeed liver cake though as it's very rich - keep it as a high value training treat only.

I found that 'squeezy cheese' (in a tube) was ideal for training my dog.

It's very easy to only squeeze a very tiny amount, and my dog was crazy for it. Also very portable on walks/out and about.

I was maybe overcautious but I heard about puppies having digestive issues when new food was given to them (especially milk/cheese-based things) so I started by giving only a bit of something to see if there was a reaction. Mine likes small bits of chicken, liver, cheese, especially the squeezy cheese. And there are some puppy treats from wilko in the shape of small bones that seem to have the puppy equivalent of crack in them!

I have an english bulldog. Cant give him cheese as it makes him really gassy and i imagine it'd give him tummy ache.

To add to the above - Tubidog liver pate from Zooplus.co.uk Equally as convenient as primula cheese, but nicer according to DDog

Treats2Sit4 has a good range of high value dried offal type treats

adaline · 28/07/2018 16:33

Ham for us - he goes nuts for it!

WisestIsShe · 29/07/2018 09:35

We use cocktail sausages cut up into tiny pieces. Each one make s about twenty treats. Dpup would do anything for them.

CleverQuacks · 29/07/2018 19:33

We use tiny bits of cocktail sausage to. She turned her nose up and all the dog treats I bought from the pet shop.
