Puppy crying / barking at night

Our 14 week lab / springer cross has slept in a crate since we got him at 8 weeks and bar a little crying first few nights has been fine.

For the last fortnight or so he has been sleeping 10.30 - 5 ish which we were hoping would stretch till 6 soon. So far so good!

However, the last few night he has woken and whined / barked at around 2 am, I've taken him out and he's done a wee then back in crate till normal time.

Tonight though, he woke at 2.20, went out did wee, back in crate but has been crying / barking ever since, I tried to ignore but worried about kids / neighbours waking up. So I've got up and let him out of crate (he stopped whining as soon as I went in kitchen) and am now lying on sofa while he's chewing a toy on the floor next to me... I'm now panicking that by going to him he will do this every night forevermore... Anyone been through similar, any tips? Thanks for reading.

Not sure what part of the country you are in but we had some slight thunder here @2-3am that I barely heard but my dog did. Could it be that?

We're in the SE, I don't think there was but it's possible. If he is the same tonight I think I'll warn the kids and neighbours, and leave him to it (making sure he has had opportunity to wee / poo). It feels so mean though... Any other advice or experience very welcome!

I’m in the SE too so I would imagine it could be the thunder. Their hearing is so good. Hope tonight goes well
