Unexplained lameness in puppy

3 month old French bulldog puppy, otherwise fit and well, had last set of vaccines 2 days ago.

Been keeping puppy quiet and cool during the day with fans, cooling mats, paddling pools etc.

About half an hour ago noticed he appeared a bit unco ordinated, now appears to have lameness in both legs on Right hand side. When laying on his side he is lifting his front right paw up and hanging the back right leg behind him.

No visible signs of pain, no signs of discomfort on manipulation of joints, toes etc.

Applied cooling jacket in case he was too warm, has tongue sticking out between his lips but not panting.

Seems very quiet.

Am waiting for out of hours vet to call back any advice of what to do in the meanwhile, hoping they will call sooner rather than later!

Take a video of what he is doing incase he stops by the time the vet sees him. Keep him quiet and await the vet call, I would be taking him in if he were mine as he is so young. Any chance he could have eaten anything?

Eating something is a possibility we have a toddler who I do my best to keep in check and stop dropping food on the floor but it's always a possibility.

I'm more worried it may be heat stroke

Doesn't sound like it but certainly cannot be ruled out. Fingers crossed the vet calls soon.

Call the vet for sure.

But also check VERY carefully for grass seeds that can work their way in between pads and cause soreness that makes the dog limp.

How is he op?

sunstrokecity · 26/07/2018 22:49

Spoke to vet and took him in. Looks like slight heat stroke, he had a saline drip and is now home with me literally watching his every breath! Have to take him back if any symptoms return.

Can you get a portable a/c unit and keep a room cool for him. He must really be struggling with breathing in this heat. Would be a good investment for a bull breed during summer time.

Dyson do a cooling fan.

sunstrokecity · 27/07/2018 07:41

We have an air conditioning unit in one of the rooms that we keep him in for majority of the time and JML arctic air fans in the others directed straight to his crate ( he's not locked in the crate other than when we are out for an hour or so but chooses to go and lay in his bed in the crate with the door open)

is it likely to be heat stroke if he is kept in air conditioned cool rooms?

adaline · 28/07/2018 07:55

Very likely with a brachycephalic breed unfortunately @BrokenWing - they really struggle in hot and humid weather, especially pugs and Frenchies.

I think the problem arose as he was out in the garden around 6pm after eating.
