Dog vomiting

Our 5 month old pup was sick a few times earlier in the week and we saw the vet. They recommended a restricted diet - water, rice, chicken - and gave us a probiotic paste (not sure about the science there but you can't seem to leave vets empty handed!).

He picked up after a day of eating rice and having lots of water/ice etc.

No sick for over a day.

So we started to return to normal food but today he was sick again this morning with a few runny poos (sorry of tmi).

We've switched back to rice again.

He seems fine in himself. Would you just keep going with a restricted diet or go back to the vet if he's sick again?

Some of the easy to digest foods are just that. My vet described them being in a form that the stomach doesn't have to do much work to digest it.

As we use wet food which my dog easily digests we don't bother with them.

LEM - I didn't go there actually. If you read the thread, I cancelled the appointment after discussing things to review over night. The vet immediately tried to ring and sell me 'special food'. I didn't ask for the call or ask to be sold anything.

We have also previously had them try to sell a massive plastic collar when it wasn't needed and charge a fortune for an over the counter anthistamine - two tablets.

No one was asking for the call, the advice or the 'special food'.

Bitey - we mix kibble with wet food.

When you move back to normal food you might want to start with the wet before you mix in his kibble as I think wet is much kinder on the stomach.

We have had a similar problem this past week with our Lab pup. The hot weather isn't helping.
Vet gave her an anti nausea/sickness jab, which seems to have worked well. Also antibiotics and small but frequent amounts of bland food - we are using Royal Cabin Gastro until her belly has fully recovered

adaline · 26/07/2018 22:09

How is he this evening OP?

inappropriatelyemployed · 27/07/2018 10:37

Thanks for asking adaline. He seems ok. Keeping him on rice and chicken. He has had one runny poo this morning but no sick. Went on a little walk too.

He seems well in himself.

Charcoal biscuits are great for pups with upset tums, you can buy them from pets at home. For a small pup, maybe three/four with each meal? Just crush them up and mix with the rice and chicken. My labs eat loads of dead stuff on the walks and a handful of biscuits prevents the dreaded overnight mess on the rugs :)

Thanks,

We have now found a bit of bloodied broken tooth on the floor this morning with some blood on his gums. Presumbably he's just chewed something.

Is this common? What do you do?!

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 27/07/2018 11:04

Is that a puppy tooth come out? Or is it an adult tooth?

inappropriatelyemployed · 27/07/2018 11:14

Ah, we are googling! We think it might be a puppy tooth - see photo

When mine was teething we often found bloody puppy teeth embedded in his toys.

DeltaZulu89 · 27/07/2018 12:02

Totally normal to lose baby teeth, you don’t need to do anything. I always think it’s a huge relief as it means the end of the needle teeth stage!

adaline · 27/07/2018 12:39

Looks like teething to me! Ours lost his around the same age.

I'm glad he's well in himself too.

inappropriatelyemployed · 27/07/2018 13:34

Ah, now he's been sick again. Just a bit.

DH walked into the kitchen and said he thought he saw something in the sick. But then the dog seemed like he has swallowed whatever it was.

But now DH is saying he can't remember if it was something..

Dog will typically try and eat their sick so you have to be really quick.

It's entirely up to you but it is near the weekend so you might want to revisit the idea of just wait and see.

neverundersold · 27/07/2018 13:50

When we got her she came with a small bag of food which we continued with. The tummy troubles started within a week, we changed the food thinking it was that but did it gradually mixing old with new but upset tummy continued. Friend who has had dogs for years told me it's not unusual for puppy's to have this problem while they are settling in. She used to eat her sloppy poo as well, not so keen now it's solid ! Still vomits a couple of times a week but usually just small amounts of liquid. Trouble is at this age everything goes in their mouth and swallowed if they can get it down.

inappropriatelyemployed · 27/07/2018 14:58

Thanks all

Just been to the vet. They did an ultrasound but couldn't see much. So we are on sit and wait and will see the vet again in the morning.

The only other option was exploratory surgery!

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 27/07/2018 15:10

Are they thinking possible obstruction?

inappropriatelyemployed · 27/07/2018 15:11

Yes - well DH thought he saw something in the vomit at lunchtime. But he wasn't sure. Thought it might have been a sock or something similar. If it was pup gobbled it straight back up.

adaline · 27/07/2018 16:40

If he's been sick again I would be taking him to the vets especially as it's Friday. You don't want him deteriorating over the weekend.

inappropriatelyemployed · 27/07/2018 19:06

Yes - thanks we went to the vets, They did an untrasound but couldn't see anything and are seeing him again tomorrow. The only other choice was to operate to see!

Sock came up this morning! Vet has said to watch out for anything else so we are on monitoring for the next couple of days. Who would believe!

OP posts:
BiteyShark · 28/07/2018 14:15

That's good news and very fortunate. The problem is you now know you have a sock eating puppy so I would make sure you hide them.

pigsDOfly · 28/07/2018 14:31

Oh thank goodness for that.

Now you need to be hyper vigilant.

Everything needs to be kept out of his way. All laundry needs to be kept high up. All bins need to be safely closed, as do all cupboards and drawers.

Dogs can be sneaky in their quest to find things to harm themselves with and puppies can be particularly stubborn in this respect.
