Many Tears Rescue - any experience?

We're considering a second dog for our boy and I was looking at this rescue today.

Heartbreaking to see all the ex-breeding dogs on it but we know we need to approach this 'head over heart' - just wondering if anyone has experience of rescuing a dog through them.

Yep what do you need to know?

LittlePearl · 23/07/2018 18:25

Thanks Vall.

Do they take time to make sure you get a good match for your home and circumstances, do they offer support and advice if you need it afterwards, and are they really honest about the issues a dog might have - that sort of thing, I guess.

Someone I know a little at dog training classes had a rottie from a rescue and she said they lied to her about the problems her dog has (it is MUCH more aggressive than she was led to believe). She has persevered with her dog anyway but it gave me pause for thought.

Many Tears have some dogs in foster and some in the rescue. They are honest as they can be but some dogs are different in different situations. Many Tears are quite strict with their rehoming criteria and do not hesitate preventing people from have dogs if they think they are not suitable or do not match the criteria- do not take this personally.

I have had three Many Tears dogs and been involved with Many Tears dogs for training once they have gone to their new homes. I have also been refused a Many Tears dog at one point :)

Are you local to Many Tears or are you looking at one in foster? It is best to be very honest about what you want, what you can deal with and what your perceptions of dog ownership are. Then the rescue will have a clearer picture of the best dog for you.

They had 31 Beagles in for rehoming a few weeks ago - do you fancy a beagle :)

LittlePearl · 23/07/2018 23:49

Yes, I spotted a lot of beagles! I'm not sure they'd be quite right for us tbh.

Thanks for sharing your experience - I'd far rather deal with a rescue organisation that turned people down than okayed them in a effort to re-home dogs as quickly as possible. They have lots of dogs that need to be with at least one other dog, which is what we're after, though we probably need a confident one rather than too timid or nervous.

We're in the south-west. Still considering several options at the moment so won't be doing anything imminently but I can't resist looking Grin

We've had four dogs from Many Tears, two older and two pups, not all at the same time!
You have to have a garden/home check first. They ask about how long the dog will be left alone, make sure your garden is secure, how often you plan to walk the dog, about insurance, etc. Also, immediate family and dogs will need to go and meet the new dog before you can adopt.
They are very good with introducing new dogs to existing dogs. The staff are all lovely, my children volunteer there and love it. You could always go and have a look round, or volunteer to do some dog walking to get a feel for the place. The dogs are all clean and happy looking, the kennels are spotless.
Ours have all been JRT's, we went to Many Tears initially after looking at The Dogs Trust who won't let you adopt a JRT if your children are under 14.
We would adopt another dog from Many Tears without hesitation.

My friend had a rescue from there recently, the dog was in a foster home and the foster carer was helpful with advice afterwards. My friend expected problems but her dog settled quickly and is lovely. He’s a shih tsu.

Thanks Shorty and Almonds, that's really helpful.

I have an ex-breeding dog, although not through Many Tears, and she's a delight.

It's like she knows we've given her a second chance and she loves us for it.

The only issue we had initially was she wouldn't walk out of the driveway. It was almost as if she didn't want to leave in case she wasn't allowed back!

I now let her off the lead at the end of the street and she runs home!
