Getting a new puppy with an existing older dog

We've got an older German Wirehaired Pointer, she's 13 and was a rescue. In typical pointer fashion, she's extremely fit and active with no aches and pains, although her hearing and eyesight aren't what they were.

I have heard from a few dog owners that a good time to get a puppy is when your existing dog is a bit older- modeling good behaviours, etc? But I wonder if she would just feel horrified at a bitey, enthusiastic interloper. She's had a rough ride over her life and had horrific separation anxiety when we got her (now totally overcome, but it took years).

Just wondering what the doghouse wisdom and experience on the matter was.

I think you can't tell tbh. My dogs aren't particularly old, but one is at best not keen on pups (we foster for a rescue) and can be completely freaked out by them. The other quite likes them if they meet his criteria - when we had really little ones he was quite nervous around them.
So I'd recommed persuading anyone you know with pups to bring them round to your house and see how they get on.
BTW, the learning from old dogs thing goes both ways - they can learn lots of undesirable lessons from old dogs too! Ddog2 likes to teach the pups the joy of digging in the garden!

Ddog2 has adopted all of Ddog1’s quirks. For example, neither of them eat food in their bowls. They both take small mouthfuls from their bowls in the kitchen, spit it out on the living room carpet and then eat it. And repeat.

Yes- the chance of a pup learning bad habits was the main reason we didn't get another dog when she had such horrific separation problems!

Good idea about bringing puppies to the house.
