Dog has just eaten a strip of fabric, wait and see or vets?

The dog is tiny, 2.5kg and 20cm tall. She’s just eaten a strip of shirt fabric approximately 8-10 cm long but only about 2cm wide. Internet seems split into see vet, watch and wait or induce vomiting (no way am I doing the last one). Wise dog house people, what should I do for the best?

I’d call the vet. The dog has eaten fabric that’s half her height! That’s long enough to get stretched out along her intestine and kill her. The vet needs to get it out while it’s still in the stomach.

Notabee · 19/07/2018 07:57

Whilst it's obviously not poisonous, that's a lots of fabric for not a lot of dog.
Can you phone the vets for advice? Ours give a free quick bit of advice over the phone (inc out of hours) and then we go in if needed after that. Good luck!

I’ll call the vets when they open, in half an hour. Why do dogs eat such stupid things?

Please call the vet now.
They may be able to come Duce vomiting to ensure the fabric doesn’t get stuck further in her system but time is of the essence

Induce vomiting , silly predictive text

BiteyShark · 19/07/2018 08:18

Call vets. My dog, unknowingly ate a rag which got stuck in his stomach and intestines and needed emergency surgery.

SpanielsAreNuts · 19/07/2018 08:33

That's a lot of fabric for a little dog. I'd definitely call vets and take their advice.

parklives · 19/07/2018 08:52

If the vets can induce vomiting and that gets it out that would be the best thing.
Otherwise you might end up with surgery because it's so unpredictable, the dog might pass it naturally or might might cause massive problems.
If the fabric is polyester/mix that is basically plastic.

Just to update, I decided not to phone the vet but to take the dog in as soon they opened. They’ve decided the best thing is to induce vomiting so I now have an anxious wait at home until it’s all done.

How stressful. Let us know how it goes at the vet. I hope its not too stressful for the dog. My dog growing up once at a string. Luckily he was okay. We did not know, until eventually when he was pooping, we saw a green thing hanging out of his butt, which my mom gently pulled out. He was thankfully, okay and it was only that one time it happened.

BiteyShark · 19/07/2018 09:38

Hopefully it will come out as it hasn't been ingested for long. Much better to come out that way than them having to open her up.

BluthsFrozenBananas · 19/07/2018 10:35

The vets have just called, she’s brought up the piece of fabric and I’m going to collect her in half an hour. I’m very relieved it’s out and we’re not looking at surgery.

Unfortunately she’s picked the worst day to do this, I’m meant to be in and out all afternoon. I can take her with me for some of what I’m doing, but I’m meant to be taking DD to the ice cream parlour with her friends in the early evening. As it stood DH is flying back from the Middle East and should have been home around 3 so he could have sat with her, but his plane has a 3 hour delay. I can see me standing outside the ice cream place with the poor dog while the DCs order everything on the menu.

That's good news phew.

DrunkenUnicorn · 19/07/2018 14:56

Glad to hear she’s ok.

DDog ate a sock last week (we didn’t see it happen, she’s almost 7 and should know better!). She was b poorly and had to have emergency surgery to remove it and 9.5’ gut that was beyond repair. She’s fine now.

My wallet is no. £2.8k down.

We were given the sock back, most expensive sock we’ll ever own! Confused

SpanielsAreNuts · 19/07/2018 21:49

drunken bloody hell that was an expensive sock! I thought £120 to make two dogs sick and then feed them activated charcoal after the nutty spaniels ate my DC's and my breakfast of teacakes (and all the raisins they contain), was bad enough.

Op I'm glad your dog is ok.

What on earth possesses dogs to eat fabric?!Confused
