teeth chattering

My beautiful boy Charlie is a collie cross and is 13 years old. We had him and his brother since pups and sadly lost his brother early this year. We bought another dog (called Blue) with the hope he might be company for Charlie. However Blue is a border collie, much younger, very hyper and much more interested in toys than Charlie.

Blue is demanding of our time and attention and sometimes Charlie doesn't get as much attention as he should. He seems to find Blues energy too much and wanders off on his own.

Recently I have noticed he has started chattering with his teeth. I wondered if it could be stress related due to Blue but the vet said it was a behavioural thing and nothing wrong with his teeth and was quite vague, but she also asked if he stares at walls/into space etc which he does.

Googling the symptoms have shown up as possible dementia. I am worried. Anybody experienced similar. Thanks for reading

Not sure if it is the same but when we got 2nd husky (both deceased now) the younger one used to chatter her teeth as a sign of submission to the older one - I thought she had a problem but it stopped once they established hierarchy (and both lived together for 10+ years after that)

Our terrier used to chatter his teeth when he was excited.

The only time I have encountered teeth chattering was in old age and was poorly tooth related. Maybe back to vet.

They can do teeth chattering to push a taste onto a scent organ between mouth and nose. They can look a little spaced out while doing it because they are concentrating on the smell/taste. My entire boy dogs do it all the time with scents left by other dogs and after sniffing each other. It could just be that because you now have another dog he's "sampling" his scent every so often. It kind if looks like the "a nice Chianti" thing.

One of my past dogs used to have a bit of teeth chattering after licking their bits.

Our boy chatters his teeth alot, has done ever since he was a puppy (now 3). He does it whenever he's excited, whether it's happiness or fear / stress.
