Barking

Some of you may have seen my several increasingly desperate posts about my new puppy (14 week old whippet) biting everything. Well the good news is that she has really improved with this. She still nips a bit but the lunging and biting has really reduced! Hurrah!

However unfortunately she has found a new favourite past time. Barking. She is clearly doing for attention because when I am watching tv or not playing with her she will sit in front of me and bark and bark and bark. I have tried ignoring it but she just goes on and on. It’s really loud to. The kids can’t sleep cos she is barking to much.

So wise mumsnetters what should I do to stop it?? We managed to fix the biting problem so I am hoping you will have some solutions to this new problem.

I had a very very barky dog, used to drive us absolutely mad! We ignored him thinking it was the right thing to do, but he would bark for hours! We got a behaviourist out and she gave us a solution that still works to this day.

All I'd say is that dogs bark for thousands of reasons, boredom, excitement, fear, attention seeking, guarding etc etc. We thought our was barking for attention but he wasn't, he was barking because he was scared and the more we ignored him the more he panicked!

Now we just reassure him and we live our lives in peace and quiet again!

Id say if you're 100% confident about why your dog is barking then ok but if there's any doubt at all pay a behaviourist because us ignoring our dog made him worse.

Good luck :-)
