Accidental puppy owner needs a book...

... so my good hearted mum has ended up taking in an unwanted puppy.
A few pertinent facts - we have never owned dogs so completely inexperienced , she lives abroad, there are no dog training/puppy socialisation classes but she has found a nice vet who has given some basic pointers on health and also I think food.
As she's not very good on the computer the best option for her to learn about owning a dog is a book - any recommendations? Something that can cover most subjects - like an easy to read reference book.
I have read threads from The Doghouse when they pop up in active conversations and I suspect there will be some slating for naively taking on this puppy but the alternative was the puppy would be killed and if mum doesn't keep the puppy that is the only alternative - as its not a country that has rescues in her area or a particularly kind approach to animals.
I am due to travel out later on in August - but I could buy something now on Amazon and get it posted out to her asap.
Thankyou

The Happy Puppy Handbook by Pippa Mattinson was great for us. She also has a great website (technically it’s about Labradors but a lot of it applies to all puppies). I also read The Perfect Puppy by Gwen Bailey and Puppy Raising Made Easy by Di Williamson. Spoiler alert: puppy raising is not easy!

But between those three books and the internet, we’ve raised ourselves a lovely dog with very few obnoxious habits (there is no cure for picnic-stealing if you’ve got a Labrador, unfortunately!).

Life skills for Puppies by Helen Zulch and Daniel Mills

A second vote for The Happy Puppy Handbook by Pippa Mattinson which I found to be a good, broad, pragmatic and easy to read book.

We too used the happy puppy handbook and to be fair puppy is VERY happy! Today I am less so and if he farts on my foot one more time he has had it!!!!!

Cath2907 Yyou are right - as I recall, Pippa never once covers how to train your dog out of farting at the wrong time/place Grin

Battendog isn't nicknamed "Guffers" for nothing...

ha ha - love it - next time I'll warn mum about dog farting if she isn't already experiencing it!

Yes that’s true. She also, in all her Labrador expertise, never mentions that the ‘Labrador hug’ is given by planting their bum directly on your toes, especially when those toes are bare.

The Happy Puppy book is excellent but, like most doggy information, heavily weighted to labradors and assumes you have nothing else to do but train your puppy.
Good luck to your kind mum, it’s mostly common sense.
