Amazed by my dog...

We have a pet food delivery business. Yesterday, we were at a local fete, showing our wares. We took our golden retriever with us, making sure she had her cool mat, lots of water and tent and fortunately, we were in the only bit of shade available.

Toward the end of the day, after much petting and fussing, she was resting under our gazebo display and a lady came over, with a boy who looked to be about 8 or 9. Now, my girl has never bitten anyone but, whenever she’s being fussed I make sure I’m with her because she can be a bit grumpy after too much and at the end of the day, she is a dog. The boy sat next to her and was stroking her back and then gently lay across her and was stroking her tail. No words were exchanged. His mum sat next to him but there was no eye contact between her, him or me. He was all about the dog. No one, and I do mean no one, gets away with touching her tail! I was just about to quickly step in, when my girl lifted her head, got even closer, put her front leg over him and rested her head on his crossed knees. Unheard of. It was obvious to me that the boy had autism. (My son is 17 and was diagnosed with asd, aged 4. We got the dog for him but he can take or leave her!). I am really astonished by what I saw. Did she know? Could she sense the boy was different to most kids who tickle her and mess about with her ears? I don’t know. All I can say is, I have never seen her behave in that way before. Ever. I came home with a real sense of respect for my lovely golden girl.

Any thoughts?

Oh that's so lovely. I don't know the neuroscience of it - but I do believe doggies can tell when someone needs a special connection. What a lovely doggy. x

I am sure that they know. No scientific evidence to back it up though which frustrate me:)

I have PAT dogs who visit the elderly and a children hospice. The dogs know how to be in situations that I as an adult find hard. They seem to adjust their behaviour to each individuals needs - Dogs are truly amazing :)

Well maybe I should rephrase this -I am sure some dogs know, not all

That's so lovely.

Yes, I think in some way they do know. Dogs are so good at reading people.

Thanks. I’m beginning to think so. Thing is, truth be told, my dog is quite “guardy” and selfish. I had a thread going on here about “which are the most affectionate, dogs or bitches?” because mine isn’t your typical “I love everyone” goldie girl. But, I now take it back. She has hidden depths of kindness 😊
