Oh no, puppy eats poo!

This is the one thing we dreaded actually. Often seen other owners with muzzled dogs (lab retrievers seem to be prone) to prevent shit munching....such a shame as the dog can't sniff or interact nearly as well.
Our 16 week old Cockapoo bitch came in last night and proudly placed an old dried out turd on the rug then started to munch. Turd was removed before DH saw anything (would not be pleased)......any advice PLEASE on how to stop this revolting behaviour. We do clean the garden often and feed her well.

She also likes fresh horse manure given half a chance 😞

She’s a dog. It’s what they do! It’s not “revolting” behaviour. Are you sure you should have a dog?!

SharpLily · 28/06/2018 18:17

Give her some pineapple to eat in her dinner. When it comes out the other end it makes the turd very unpleasant to eat for the dog, who will soon get out of the habit.

SenoritaViva · 28/06/2018 18:18

She's a dog, they do that. Some breeds are more likely to eat/roll (I have a roller). You can train her not to bring inside though.

ScreamingValenta · 28/06/2018 18:18

The only way is to keep your dog away from any poo. Mine isn't interested in dog poo, but will wolf down cat poo given the opportunity. It's a tasty snack as far as they are concerned.

Fridakahlofan · 28/06/2018 18:24

My dog grew out of this and is a cockapoo. I'd just give her a stern 'no' if I caught her in the act on a walk

Bananarama12 · 28/06/2018 18:28

Dogs eat shit. No need to muzzle? But if she's eating other dogs shit then you need to feed her better food.

TheCrowFromBelow · 28/06/2018 18:28

Cat poo & Sheep poo & Horse poo &Bird poo, These are a few of my favourite things
^^ sung by my dog on every walk ever.
He doesn’t eat dog poo though.
Cat poo is the worst Envy

My recently departed dog liked all poo. My other likes veggie poo.

Both love rolling in fox poo. That’s worse as it means I have to clean it up.

Tinkobell · 28/06/2018 18:48

Thank you for all the tips....pineapples a new one, never heard of that - would imagine it'd come through like a steam train tho! 😬
@Wildling - "are you sure you should have a dog?" - oh well, you've got me all of a dither there - had dogs for 47 years thanks but actually not had a muncher - if you don't think it's revolting - move in for a nice face lick afterwards! 😂

If you’ve had dogs for 40-odd years then you should be well versed in this...... Hmm
Dogs eat shit.
I don’t let my dog lick my face - shit or no shit.

missbattenburg · 28/06/2018 21:22

Loads of dogs eat poo. Loads more go through a phase of it when they are about this age. Your job is to try and stop it being a habit and hopefully she will grow out of it (mostly).

Regarding her own poo: pick it up as soon as she does it so she doesn't get the chance to eat it. When out for a walk start working on the "leave it" command so that you can use it when you come across poo she is interested in.

Repeat, repeat, repeat and cross your fingers.

I don't think pineapple etc works but SOME dogs do eat poo because they are not getting enough nutrients from their food. So long as she's being fed a good quality food, this should not be an issue for her.

adaline · 29/06/2018 06:11

Try bananas! My trainer recommended it as we have a beagle who loves to eat cat shit!

MiddleClassProblem · 29/06/2018 09:52

How do you get the cats to eat bananas? Grin

Tinkobell · 29/06/2018 12:52

Had a yorkie who was a fox poo roller, a westie who was a golden-showerer, a toy poodle who was impeccable....but not had a poo muncher til now. Hopefully this is just a passing puppy phase, thanks for the weird and wonderful suggestions!

Sorry for FB video but I have a friend who runs a dog training school and she posted this the other day - specifically mentioned it can be used to train dogs to avoid poo rather than eating it, which might be helpful? I don't actually have a dog yet so I haven't tried it out myself.
