Spaniel Food to Make Them Less Smelly?

GlitterEverywhere · 27/06/2018 17:42

Not flatulent, just less smelly in general.

I didn't even know this was a thing until I read it here.

Any recommendations? 'Light' varieties prefers as she is on a weight loss regime since she came to me 4 weeks ago.

There isn't a food that will reduce the amount of oil they produce.
Assuming his teeth, ears and anal glands aren't creating the odour, do you brush him every day with a brush and cloth? Its like grooming a horse, it puts a shine on the coat and removes the excess grease.

BiteyShark · 27/06/2018 17:54

I think just feeding them a food that's good for them and they digest well helps smelliness.

When my spaniels stomach is well and he's digesting food well he smells 'better'.

upsydaisysister · 27/06/2018 17:56

I think they are just quite a pongy breed. Letting them out lots seems to help although that could just be the fresh air circulating more!

sweetboykit · 27/06/2018 17:59

We feed our spaniel hypoallergenic, no grain, chicken dry food from Tails. Spaniels are the breed most likely to have tummy problems. If he's eaten something he shouldn't his farts are grim. He even disgusted himself once. He smelt the fart in the air, sniffed his own butt, looked and me incredulously and left the room.

Thank you everyone.

@Bitey what is the best food for them do you think?

@sweetboy that made me laugh.

She's been ok so far on the tummy front l

I've had several spaniels and they've all been fine except for one that smelled distinctly cheesy! I have nothing further to add. ..

agedknees · 27/06/2018 18:03

We changed our dogs food to forthglade complete. No more smelly dog and his poo is easy to pick up. He wolfs it down too.

MellowMelly · 27/06/2018 18:03

I second Tails!

Brilliant food and delivery service and not ridiculously expensive. My dog had been much better smell wise since she’s been eating it.

Defender90 · 27/06/2018 18:03

My spaniels done well and didn't stink on Burns Chicken & Rice - in their older years they went onto the weight control one, that may be an idea to try and change to?

GlitterEverywhere · 27/06/2018 18:05

I will look into all of those, thank you

GlitterEverywhere · 27/06/2018 18:08

@Defender the cat gets Burns. I don't know why that makes a difference but it does Grin

I use a mixture of millieswolfheart wet and forthglade wet food.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 27/06/2018 19:48

My girl is only part spaniel but joining in anyway...she has Gentle cold pressed food, the fish one, I add veggies or a bit of tuna or mackerel on top in the morning and she has it plain in the evening. She has plain boiled turkey, chicken or liver for training rewards. If we do a Kong then it is Gentle, yoghurt and veg frozen or a bit of Natures menu wet food frozen. She doesn’t fart, doesn’t smell or only if her grooming and clipping is overdue! We brush her nightly and clean her ears weekly.

thegirlsallgrowedupnow · 27/06/2018 20:15

She also has a monthly raw marrowbone to clean her teeth, would do it more often but hence the OP , spaniel tums can be iffy!

SpanielsAreNuts · 27/06/2018 20:22

My favourite for getting non-smelly spaniels is blue chip calm and relaxed or the slim version (works for my bro's dog). Both are fairly low calorie which is why my boys are no longer on it (my boys struggle to hold weight). But none of them smelt at all doggy, not even faintly, when fed that.

Having tried multiple foods to get one they could eat enough of to maintain weight without digestive upset including very high quality 80/20 ones, I eventually found "barking heads tender loving care" which they could eat enough of to maintain weight and they have very very little doggy smell on.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 27/06/2018 23:17

What are you currently feeding?

Tails isn't that great despite the marketing, and has just been bought out by one of the big companies (Mars?) so it's not going to improve.

AllAboutDogFood.co.uk is an excellent website for identifying good quality foods.

Shutityoutart · 27/06/2018 23:24

My spaniel stinks around his gums and mouth. His teeth and gums have been checked but he still stinks and no idea why?!

Theboldandthebeautiful1 · 27/06/2018 23:27

Our Spaniel is doing well on More (similar to Canagan but slightly cheaper).

geekone · 28/06/2018 00:48

Guru food our pup, not a spaniel, is much less smelly and it seems super good for them.

GlitterEverywhere · 28/06/2018 07:23

Currently on Royal Canin light as she was on RC before I got her, but I’ve heard this isn’t that great.

My rescue spaniel did fantastically well on a raw diet, he came to me food aggressive, with a dull coat and smelly but raw sorted that out. I avoided Nature's Menu as the balance of meat to fillers isn't great when used as a whole food rather than a treat.

Wallywobbles · 28/06/2018 07:28

Check the folds round her mouth. They can go rotten, literally Our cocker had to have his removed. The improvement odour wise is epic.

BiteyShark · 28/06/2018 07:31

My spaniel really doesn't do well on kibble but he does has inflammatory bowel disease so I do think it's just too harsh. He is much better all round on good quality (so at least 70% meat and rest veg) wet food. His coat is better, he is less smelly and his poos are hard.

SpanielsAreNuts · 28/06/2018 10:00

Royal canin is what both my spaniels were on when they came to me. They smelt of a very strong doggy smell. It takes a couple of weeks for the smell to go, once changed onto a better food.
