Superficially (quick glance of the packaging), it looks like it might be a healthy choice and I don't mind paying a premium for quality food, but is it a good quality kibble that's worth the extra?

You can use allaboutdogfood.co.uk to compare brands in terms of price and ingredients.

rockcakesrock · 27/06/2018 17:38

I use only Lily’s for my dog. I think it is well worth it

HyacinthsBucket70 · 27/06/2018 17:39

I think it's a bit of style over substance to be honest. I used to feed mine the foil trays but stopped when I had a bad one that was full of horrid tubes/valves instead of meat. They sent me an email saying offal/connective tissue was an integral part of their food and healthy - but it wasn't what I was paying £1 a tray for!

We're using Nature's Menu incidentally, but it only really matters if your dog likes it Grin.

I'll have a look at the allaboutdogfood comparison site - thank you

I haven't heard of it. I'll google. I use millies, which is similar pricing.

dudsville · 27/06/2018 17:52

I just compared their salmon and trout kibble to millies. They do spend money on their packaging. In terms of ingredients there's a lot in lilys that I'd have to google to see if my dog needed. Millies just has, for instance, 70%salmon and 30% vegetable. I like that it's simple!

dudsville · 27/06/2018 17:57

My apologies, I have looked at millies again and there's a lot of stuff in there too. Been too long since I last studied dog food!

cowfacemonkey · 27/06/2018 18:00

Agree with dudsville, I buy Millie's for mine (both wet and dry) and like that it is very simple. I think you're paying extra for the packaging and branding with Lily's. I also like Millie's because when my pup was small and struggled with tummy problems I emailed for advice I was sent a very comprehensive reply with lots of advice.

Bananarama12 · 27/06/2018 18:00

Carnilove is a good dog food. I switched from lilys kitchen to this as better ingredients and cheaper.

FairfaxAikman · 27/06/2018 18:05

It's a pretty good food but for the same money I'd go for Millie's Wolfheart or even look at raw completes.

geekone · 27/06/2018 18:28

We used allaboutbogfood website and decided on guru. It looks really expensive but you use much less so works out cheaper and is great for dog.

Eifla · 27/06/2018 18:54

Anything that comes in dried pellets in a paper bag is not a “proper food for dogs” and therefore not worth the money 🤷‍♀️

Their tinned meals aren’t bad though.

olivetor7 · 27/06/2018 19:03

Another one for Millie’s wolfheart. Great food but do check the feeding recommendations- a lot of the varieties are for very active dogs eg- 5 + hours of exercise a day.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 27/06/2018 23:14

Lily's do have a great deal of marketing and ultimately the consumer does pay for that.

I used allaboutdogfood.co.uk and settled on Markus Muhle, which is very similar to Guru, to the extent of being produced in the same factory (Guru staff told me this). If you want wet, Butternut Box is a good choice for quality and reasonable price.

geekone · 28/06/2018 00:55

@Eifla nonsense. Cold pressed food is in pellet form and is much better than a lot of sloppy timed food with “meat derivatives”. A full food is good ensuring you have veg and calcium and protein for your dog that’s more than meat derivative or meat flavoured

drearydeardre · 28/06/2018 08:22

my dog who snaffles everything - she loves her food - is fed on naturo senior or grain free mixed with a good quality dry food - harringtons or hills
she does well on it although she has a sensitive stomach.
I cannot/justify spending a lot on dog food (which has a cutesy name )- I fed my previous dog the same diet and he was healthy until 14yo!

Vallahalagonebutnotforgotten · 28/06/2018 08:32

Lilys is a good food but there are a lot of good foods on the market that are not as expensive as Lilly.

Lily's have excellent ethical ethos which does cost more money eg packaging ,making sure the meat they use is ethical sourced and not factory farmed, is truly organic etc. I believe they also give 10% of their sales to Compassion in World Farming.

If you are happy to pay for excellent ethics then Lily'sis up there is you are on a budget and want good quality food that does not have to be Lily's.

missbattenburg · 28/06/2018 09:27

Battendog mostly eats raw but we do switch to wet and kibble when going away because it's easier to handle than raw when we're staying with friends, etc.

Kibble is one of the following...

  • Millie's
  • Eden
  • Aatu
  • Akela
  • Canagan

Whatever I happen to like the look of at the time.

missbattenburg · 28/06/2018 09:27

p.s. battendog is a springer
