Fleas!

We've got two cockers and we are INFESTED.

They were spot on-ed up to date with the stuff from the vet, think it's Endectrid. We brought their next one forward a few days but still had fleas so about two weeks after that we washed them with flea shampoo and (when totally dry) used frontline with a different active ingredient, and sprayed the whole house with Staykill.

Still got fleas, just treated on schedule again with the vet stuff (after an actual deep bath and hour long shower each, again once fully dry) spayed whole house again with Staykill today (extra thoroughly this time). Just come upstairs and a flea jumped off the carpet into my leg.

DH Just saw one at the bottom of the garden? How do we kill them in the garden?

I'm going to cry. I am apparently the tastiest thing to fleas and I react badly to bites so I am COVERED in massive itchy lumps.

What else can we do? We're both at work all day (DH walks dog at lunch) and have a toddler, so the hoovering, spaying, leaving and airing is a right pain.

Vet just says to keep treating on schedule and spray the house regularly and it's just not working.

We have cats as well so flea bombing is an absolute last resort as they've never been anywhere else (people and dogs could possibly stay with family for a night), and does it even work?

Please help!

Many years ago we had a flea invasion. I washed all the dogs and cats in flea shampoo, afterwards taking each one out of the house and putting them in cages to dry, while I vacuumed and spread flea powder everywhere. Pay close attention to vacuuming and powdering the skirting boards and the edges of pathways outside. I read that fleas hide and lay eggs in corners.

Good luck.

I feel your pain! We also have an ongoing flea problem with our cats. I've come to the conclusion that the spot on stuff from the vets just does not work. At all. None of them. The spray for the house doesn't seem fabulous either.

Our current plan of attack is using tablets to kill the fleas often enough to break the cycle and hopefully get on top of it. There's a few different ones - Capstar, and Johnson's 4 Fleas, which seems to be cheaper but just as effective. Our cats are certainly happier for a couple of days after having them and you can see the fleas dropping dead.

You have my sympathies, I was absolutely infested for a while and am also apparently very tasty - my feet, ankles and legs were covered it bites.

For me, the only thing that worked was Indorex and Frontline Plus (much to my surprise - all the advice on here suggested only Advocate would work). I sprayed the whole house with the Indorex and boil washed all baskets, cushion covers, bedding etc - basically anything that would fit in the washing machine went in, on the hottest wash possible. I also It was a complete pain, but it was completely worth it to be flea free!

Also, are you treating the cats? They might be picking up the fleas from the dogs and re-infecting them?

Wolfiefan · 26/06/2018 22:36

Shampoo is rubbish.
OTC stuff is useless or dangerous.
I don't know that spot on. We use nexgard spectra and never seen a flea. Frontline is rubbish.
Indorex the house.

Cats are treated up to date with whatever the vets one for them is (I think that one is Advocate?) and appear to be flea free.

Should have said I'm also washing everything I can on a hot wash when I spray.

Will order some indorex, and flea powder, and try to convince the vet we need nexgard, or possibly tablets? (I hate spot on anyway so tablets would be grand).

Thank you!

In some cases really bad infestations need a multiple product approach, but this should only be done on direct advice from a vet. I dealt with an infestation last year where we used a careful schedule of four products on all the animals in the household.

Wolfiefan · 26/06/2018 22:44

Don't know what flea powder is but I wouldn't. Indorex and a decent spot on will sort it.

BeansOnToastWithCheese · 26/06/2018 22:47

Good luck, hope the Indorex works. I got it from the vet in my local Pets at Home.

Otherwise you can order from the normal bit of Pets at Home but you do have to order it - they don't stock it as standard.

Hi - I really think given the severity you've got to get to the vets.
For the animals I'd get oral Bravecto. For the loose covers, blankets, clothing wash on hot with Dettol Laundry Cleanser.
Hoover Hoover Hoover then empty the bag and throw it away.
Sofas, beds etc get RIP fleas from the vets and spray and ventilate.
Garden area....try a light application of Westland Resolva maybe but I'm not a fan of insecticides outside as you risk killing bees.
Take an antihistamine tablet for your bites.
If you're working to sort this quickly you may have to take half a day off to get the gear and treat or you risk transferral through the whole house.

Wear plastic bags around your legs and secure with rubber bands while spraying to stop the f'ers jumping and biting you.

Cat owner rather than dog - but Indorex is brilliant. With our cats Frontline was worse than useless - Advocate worked a treat.
I bought Indorex online at a fraction of the vet cost.

We're fighting a losing battle here. Got a 17 week old puppy and a 9 year old house cat. But every fleabitten cat on the estate walks through my garden and I've also found fox shit in there too. So the pup must bring them in. We use RIP Flea round the house, broadline for the cat and we've tried various types from the vet for the dog. Not making much of a difference. I would like to fleabomb the house but there's nowhere for the cat to go.
