What does your dog avoid when out?

Barkdog seems to hate shopfronts, we've recently discovered. If theres a single shop on its own that's fine, but any more than one in a row and he just stops and lays down and refuses to move! We thought something was wrong with his legs the first few times it seemed so random! You can walk on the opposite side of the road to them, but not the same side. I think it's all the people who mill about in the street on a parade of shops that he doesn't like. And random litter, if there's a tv dumped or a bin bag it's like an alien to be avoided!

He hates puddles (or water in general, really) but he'll go really far out of his way to avoid walking in water! I met up with a friend yesterday and we both brought the dogs (both beagles) and had a walk on the beach before it got too hot. Hers was all running about splashing and mine was like...are you mad? I'm not going in there!

BiteyShark · 26/06/2018 19:23

Mine doesn't like road signs, the temporary ones on the ground. He gets all skittish and then tries to size it up Confused

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 26/06/2018 19:46

Very occasionally we'll come across something a bit random that he's unsure about and will back away from before investigating further. Recently it's been some weightlifting equipment and some cloth draped over a garden wall. It's rare though and being a terrier he's not prone to skittishness.

For those things that he more consistently dislikes (motorbikes being the bane of my life), he considers barking and lunging to be a more appropriate response. He's a work in progress...

Mine went through a phase of freaking out at wheely suitcases. He also is mightily suspicious of things like bags of cement and general building work clutter, and will give them the widest berth possible if someone's having some work done on their front garden/front of their house. Signs or banners that flap in the wind stop him in his tracks too.

On the other hand, he'll try and go into every pub we walk past, which is telling, I think.

Mine avoids small children. He’s scared of them.

Embarrassingly he tries to go in any pub/bar we pass. He looks like a propping the bar up type of dog.

I once had a dog that kept changing his fearful thing. One day it suddenly became drumming. I can understand this, it could be interpreted as a deep rumble. But what he did with his fright was to run off at speed on to a football pitch and stop play, sitting in the middle of the players while we shouted to him and eventually caught up and collected him!

Mine hates shiny or slippery-looking floors. He's a large dog and having to carry him over thresholds to deposit him on carpet is somewhat awkward. I took him into a pub the other day as it was too hot to leave him in the car, even though parked in shade with boot open. There was a tiny entrance porch with a stone floor before the carpet began. He's not the sort of dog that you can easily pick up and carry... but i did!

Can't believe I forgot his epic cow meltdown. We had to walk past some cows while on a massive hike in the Cotswolds (the public footpath went straight through a field) and Noodle was having none of it. He didn't even bark, he just planted his feet and wouldn't move. He managed to slip free of his harness and just stood there. Obviously time was of the essence so my partner picked him up and carried him across the field. Never been so relieved to get through a gate.

Literally nothing. Minefields, plague pits, axe-murderers; all are inviting and delightful to ToothDog Hmm

pigsDOfly · 28/06/2018 12:03

Mine walks round puddles.

She goes through phases of being fearful of flying things in the house: flies, moths, daddy long legs, she hates them all, sometimes.

And spiders; I had one living in one of my light fittings that I just couldn't catch. It would come out at night and she would sit on the sofa looking up at it with fearful eyes. If it moved she'd rush off upstairs. As much as I hate to I had to kill it in the end.

Parked motorbikes, will not walk past them. Not bothered about ones that are on the move funnily enough even though he sometimes lunges out at fast moving cars, he ignores the noisy bikes.

those huge black plastic covered hay bales in fields - fortunately they are not there all the time
also vehicles with trailers/caravans.
