To much sun?

My pup is currently lied spread out on the patio in the sunshine. She has been out there for the past half an hour. When I touch her she feels really hot. Should I bring her in? Can dogs get sun stroke?

I would have thought pup would want to come in - if feeling too hot.
As dogs can only perspire thru their paws and need to pant (is she panting?) I would bring her in to be on the safeside
Dogs can get sunstroke.

Puppies can be a bit stupid sometimes.

It's going to be very hot this coming week so we will not going out until about 8 or 9 in the evening for our walks. My dog hates the sun and spends the whole day lying in the shady part of the garden.

Not only can dogs get sunstroke but when the ground is very hot their paws can get badly burned.

If you have to take her out in the sun just make sure you keep her well hydrated and perhaps wet her coat from time to time to cool her down.

I'd definitely keep her out of the sun as much as possible.

Please bring her in. It can be very dangerous for dogs to overheat. Is she ok now?

CleverQuacks · 24/06/2018 16:28

She has come in and had a big drink of water. I will try to keep an eye on her in this hot weather. I love her to bits but she is not the brightest lol

Mine lies in the sun. At noon. We live by the equator! And she's just fine. But it's hot here year round and she's never known different, so she can regulate herself. Your pup may not have experienced 'hot' like this before (There's a heatwave in UK, right?!) So it makes sense to keep an eye on her out there, and maybe bring her in to cool down after a bit.

Grin love all your sunbathing dogs!
In contrast, my boy tips over his water (in the kitchen) and rolls in it! Than he will sleep in this cold mess....
paddling pool or water outside isn't the same as our kitchen floor!!

Ha! moon, what a soggy cold nest that must be. They have some funny preferences these dogs. Here's my lunatic....looks like somebody left a flat dog at my door

If she's pale/white I would put suncream on her too. Dogs burn just like humans and can get melanomas and skin cancers just like we can.

And yes, puppies aren't the smartest! They're babies and need us to make decisions for them - so if it's warm, make sure she has plenty of water/ice cubes/frozen treats to eat and play with, and access to shade too.

Overheating can cause heart failure in dogs - it happened to one of mine.
Please keep your dog in a cool place at the hottest time of day.
Bathe his/her head with lukewarm water to reduce body temperature.
